ServiceNow Art Director Jono H. strives to live a sustainable lifestyle. Having grown up in California, he developed a love for the outdoors early on through camping, snowboarding, wakeboarding, and bicycling.
Over the past 10 years, Jono became increasingly aware of the climate change taking place throughout the world. Wanting to turn that realization into action, he decided to participate in a 2041 Foundation Antarctica expedition.
When Jono needed to raise funds to cover the trip, he went to his manager. ServiceNow’s purpose to make the world work better for everyone is not limited to technology. It extends to making a global impact in environmental, social, and governance areas. In fact, ServiceNow achieved 100% renewable electricity and carbon neutrality in operations, business travel, and work from home in 2021.
ServiceNow was proud to sponsor Jono on his trip.
Helping to fulfill a mission
Founded by Robert Swan, the first person to walk to both the North and South poles, the 2041 Foundation has a simple mission: to preserve Antarctica as a natural reserve for science and peace. “[Antarctica] was the most pristine wilderness I have ever seen,” Jono says.
Although Antarctica is protected by the Antarctic Treaty, which helps prevent human exploitation in the icy region, climate change is taking its toll and melting ice. Antarctica holds 90% of the world’s ice and 70% of the world’s fresh water, according to the National Science Foundation. It’s important that further melting is curbed to prevent larger issues globally.
Jono and his expedition team cleaned up two times the amount of carbon they emitted on the trip.
Making an impact
When Jono returned home, he had a new perspective. “Before this trip, I was wondering, ‘Do my individual actions and decisions even matter?’ because this is such a massive problem,” he says. “Coming back from this trip, I realize absolutely they do.”
Since the expedition, Jono has dedicated himself to helping preserve our world and fighting the effects of climate change no matter how big or small his impact may be. He routinely collaborates with organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area on various projects, including beach and park cleanup efforts. “We all have a role to play in protecting our environment,” he says.
