Meet Laurie

Laurie Marlowe is a ServiceNow systems administrator and developer with Evergy, the largest electric company in Kansas that serves more than one million residential, commercial, and industrial customers. Laurie has extensive experience in information systems, configuration management, and software quality assurance. In Laurie’s current role at Evergy, her responsibilities include developing solutions for managing NCPI protected information, handling upgrades, maintaining a self-service customer portal, creating new workflows, mentoring other developers, and much more.

 

Starting her path with training

When Laurie was introduced to ServiceNow, she had little exposure to it. “The company I worked for had one system administrator who decided to pursue a career with a ServiceNow partner. I had about three days of training from the outgoing administrator, and then it was my baby. And what a baby it was!” There was not money in the budget until three months later for training. “I quickly learned the ServiceNow wiki was my best friend! When I finally took ServiceNow training through Now Learning, it connected the dots from what I learned on my own. I was passionate about the platform and knew this was my new career path.” ServiceNow has helped Laurie move her career forward, and getting certified through the Now Learning training program has played a big role in that.

 

The benefits of certification

Laurie currently holds four ServiceNow certifications:

  • CMDB Health Micro-certification
  • Configure the CMDB Micro-certification
  • Certified Applications Developer
  • Certified System Administrator

“Many opportunities have come my way as a result of the training, my experience, and the certifications, proving to employers my skill set and knowledge of the platform,” says Laurie. Shortly after receiving her system administrator certification, Laurie was offered an opportunity to work with Evergy. “Since that time, I have had many recruiters contact me for opportunities that they’ve expressed they are looking for someone with the certifications and experience I have to offer.”

 

Becoming a subject matter expert and putting that knowledge to work

ServiceNow training and certifications have elevated Laurie to a subject matter expert for the Now Platform®. “The training I took introduced me to the possibilities and power of the platform.” She has used that knowledge to benefit her employer in a variety of ways. Now Laurie can see new possibilities and solutions to processes that seem cumbersome. Monthly, regulated activities related to BES Cyber System Information (BCSI) are now more automated with ServiceNow. Laurie developed a solution that incorporates change requests, interceptors, templates, scheduled jobs, approvals, and workflows. What used to take hours of manual tracking and labor is now done efficiently and accurately, making it possible to show auditors a repeatable process with great accuracy.

 

Taking advantage of Now Learning options

Laurie is continuing to expand her Now Platform knowledge. “The ServiceNow live classes, whether in person or virtual, are exceptional,” says Laurie. “I find the virtual classes have excellent content, and the instructors are always willing and available to go that extra mile to ensure their students are grasping the material presented.” Laurie’s preference is the virtual classes because they can be done from anywhere, and the class schedule times are within her normal workday schedule. On-demand, self-paced courses can also be done from anywhere at any time and many offer micro-certifications. “My company is very supportive of our team taking Now Learning courses to continuously improve our skillset.”
