post Starting Out in ServiceNow: Turn Your Training Into Experience in Community Central articles

You’ve finished training, built catalog items, written scripts, and worked with flows. Then you start lookin’ for a job—and every opening seems to require experience.

That frustration came up in a recent Slack discussion I was communicating in. The question was straightforward: How do you get your first opportunity when you haven’t had one yet?

Here's my opinion and some of the things I did to help me out.

Connect your technical skills to business processes.

Knowing how to write a Business Rule is useful. Explaining what business problem it solves makes that knowledge stronger.

Start with IT Service Management (ITSM): incidents, problems, changes, and service requests. Follow a ticket from creation through resolution. Understand assignment, approvals, SLAs, and what happens when something goes wrong.

For IT Operations Management (ITOM), begin with CMDB fundamentals: configuration items, relationships, and data quality. Use ServiceNow University to find relevant learning paths and training.

Build, Build, Build... Build something you can explain.

ServiceNow offers free Personal Developer Instances (PDIs) for learning and experimentation through its Developer Program.

Use yours to build a small project with a clear purpose. For example, create an equipment request process with approval, fulfillment tasks, notifications, and a report.

Document:

The business problem and requirements.

What you configured and why.

How you tested successful and unsuccessful scenarios.

Screenshots or a short demonstration.

What you would improve next.

Label it honestly as a personal project. It gives an interviewer something concrete to discuss without presenting it as paid experience.

Make practice a habit.

One approach I recently started using is, creating a scheduled ServiceNow JS Drill in ChatGPT. It provides a short weekday exercise, with an expanded format designed to take about 10 minutes, rotating among Business Rules, Script Includes, and Flow Designer scripting.

The idea is simple: read the scenario, try solving it yourself, then review the answer and explanation. That helps me practice my reasoning instead of just copying code.

Here is the original prompt I used to create it:

Every weekday, give me a short beginner-friendly ServiceNow JavaScript drill focused on Business Rules, Script Includes, and Flow Designer scripting confidence. Use a realistic admin scenario, ask me to solve it, then provide the answer with notes on why it works.

I later expanded it to include starter snippets, explanations of the APIs involved, server-side versus client-side considerations, and one common mistake to avoid. Test your solutions in your PDI and check the relevant documentation.

Be intentional about certifications and applications.

Choose certifications that support the work you want to do. If you already hold a certification, put that knowledge into a project you can demonstrate.

When searching, consider junior administrator, associate developer, trainee, and platform support roles, if they exist.
Include ServiceNow partners and professional services companies in your search. Ask about mentoring, supervised work, and opportunities to learn.

Let people see how you think.

Participate in the ServiceNow Community, ask thoughtful questions, and share solutions you have actually tested. Explain your approach, including what didn’t work and how you corrected it.

You don’t need to know everything before applying. Keep building, keep practicing, and give employers clear evidence of what you can do.

I Hope this helps.
