Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some career guidance from the ServiceNow community.

I have been working in a ServiceNow Service Catalog support role for the past four years. Now, I want to transition into a more technical role. Since I haven't had the right guidance, I've remained in a support position, and I'm finding it difficult to decide which career path to choose.

Currently, I’m pursuing the ServiceNow Certified System Administrator (CSA) certification. However, I’m confused about whether I should aim for a ServiceNow Administrator role or a ServiceNow Tester role.

I would really appreciate your suggestions on:

Which role offers better long-term career growth?

Which path is the best way to enter the technical side of ServiceNow?

What skills should I focus on to make a successful transition?

If anyone has made a similar career move or has experience in either role, I would be grateful if you could share your insights.

Thank you in advance for your advice and support!

Hello @TanujaL59105918 ,

Since you already have 4 years of Service Catalog support experience, I would recommend pursuing the ServiceNow Administrator path rather than the Tester path.

An Administrator role provides a stronger foundation for moving into development, implementation, platform administration, integrations, and specialized modules like ITSM, HRSD, CSM, ITOM, or IRM. Your support experience will also be highly valuable because you already understand ServiceNow processes, catalog items, workflows, and user interactions. Testing is a good career option, but it is generally more focused on validating platform functionality through manual and automated testing rather than building or configuring solutions. If your goal is to become more technical, the Administrator path offers broader long-term growth and more opportunities.

After completing your CSA, focus on hands-on skills such as Service Catalog, Flow Designer, Business Rules, Client Scripts, Script Includes, GlideRecord, UI Policies, ACLs, Integrations (REST APIs), Update Sets, and basic JavaScript. Building projects in a Personal Developer Instance (PDI) and earning certifications like CAD after CSA will also significantly improve your profile.

With your experience, you're already well-positioned to transition into a technical role. Strengthening your platform configuration and scripting skills will likely open more opportunities than moving into testing, especially if your long-term goal is to become a ServiceNow Administrator, Developer, or Technical Consultant.

If this helps you then mark it as helpful and accept as solution.

Regards,

Aditya

Hello @TanujaL59105918 ,

Here are few tips for CSA :

First of all, for the ServiceNow CSA exam, there are two recommended prerequisite courses. These courses help you understand all the core ServiceNow concepts, configurations, and skills required to clear the CSA.

They also provide essential hands-on knowledge that every ServiceNow Administrator should have.

Start reading Servicenow CSA E-book , you will get your e-book from fundamental course .

Most of the time, people get bored reading such a big eBook. However, it is very helpful for the exam. If you have already gone through the concepts in the eBook, and the same topics appear in the exam, you can quickly recognize that those questions are from specific sections.

So, don’t ignore the eBook—try to complete it.

The most important parts of the eBook are the last sections, such as Security Center, Shared Responsibility Model, and ServiceNow Encryption. These sections are often overlooked, but based on personal experience, around 4–5 questions can come from them.

Also, most of the theory and concepts in the eBook are already covered in ServiceNow prerequisite courses, so it becomes easier to revise quickly.

CSA exam blueprint you can refer from here :

https://learning.servicenow.com/lxp/en/credentials/certified-system-administrator-mainline-exam-blue...

All the best for CSA 👍 .

Hi there @TanujaL59105918

With 4 years of Service Catalog experience, I'd lean towards the ServiceNow Administrator path. Your support background gives you a solid understanding of the platform and business processes, which is a great foundation.

Finish your CSA, get hands-on with platform administration, flows, scripting basics, and notifications. Once you're comfortable, you can branch into development, ITSM, or other specialized areas. Testing is valuable too, but the Admin path generally opens up more long-term opportunities.

I echo along with most, ServiceNow Administrator will be more valuable as it pertains to the more technical side of ServiceNow and is more broad and versatile imho.

Cheers,
