Hello everyone,

I need some genuine career advice from experienced ServiceNow professionals.

My background:

2.4 years of IT experience (previously worked as a developer).
Currently have a 1.6-year career gap.
I have decided to restart my career by learning ServiceNow.

I have a few questions:

Is it realistic to switch to ServiceNow after a 1.6-year career gap?
Will companies consider my previous 2.4 years of IT experience, or should I apply as a fresher?
What are the chances of getting interview calls with my profile?
Up to what level should I learn ServiceNow before I start applying for jobs?
Which topics are essential for getting an entry-level ServiceNow Developer role?
Is learning from YouTube enough, or is joining a training institute recommended?

If you have interest to learn new technology, I don't think any training institute is needed as ServiceNow University provides all the learning material/courses.

Regarding your questions:

Tanushree: Of course, it's realistic. I've seen many people successfully transition to ServiceNow from completely different technologies.

A career gap doesn't prevent you from making the switch if you build the right skills and stay consistent.

Q2. Will companies consider my previous 2.4 years of IT experience, or should I apply as a fresher?

Your previous IT experience still has value, especially if you worked in software development, testing, support, or any enterprise application.

While your ServiceNow experience may be at an entry level, you should apply for ServiceNow Administrator/ Developer roles rather than limiting yourself to fresher positions. Highlight your previous technical experience along with your new ServiceNow skills.

Q3. What are the chances of getting interview calls with my profile?

Your chances depend on how well you prepare and present your profile.

A strong resume, hands-on ServiceNow projects, LinkedIn networking, and consistent applications can significantly improve your interview opportunities.

First complete ServiceNow Administration Fundamentals course from Servicenow University
Practice all lab tasks in The given learning instance.
Practice in your Personal Developer Instance (PDI)
Practice mock question with Correct Answer
Practice from ServiceNow university provided practice(If you have access) : https://account.measureup.com/servicenow-university
Check the syllabus from Certified System Administrator (CSA) Mainline Exam Blueprint
Practice a lot with mock questions .
If anything left or you are struggling with answering practice test, Revisit the course content.
Once you are confident , Schedule the exam and Go for it.

Note: Once registered, you have 90 days to schedule and complete your exam.

welcome to the ServiceNow Community! your questions cannot be fully answered as they might vary specific job offer in each organisation.. but i will try to answer them.

What does "switch to ServiceNow" mean? What position? (see the journeys and paths below)
If you have 2+ years expeirence in non-ServiceNow and apply for ServiceNow, you will be considered a fresher in my opinion, fresher with "bonus",
This varies in time, location and position.. different answer for a particular position today, tomorrow or in 3 months, as well as different scenario for admin, developer or business analyst,... some organisations look for "complete" profiles, some invest in freshers and train them to the position they need, this depends on what company it is and who they are looking for. Usually a referal (somebody from the company recommends you) helps a lot.
The more the better, having some certifications shows your dedication and capability to finish things (CSA, CAD and other mainline certs are paid, but micro-certifications are for free),
knowing javascript is a big advantage, understanding client x server logics, difference between ui policy, client script, business rules, script include, app scopes, update sets, ...
YouTube is tricky - the official SN videos are very high level, created for wide audience so it is not technical, it is for manager or non-tech people to understand it, and the personal blogs are very often generated by AI and using an absolute nonsense (for example scenario that is not realistic) so it can teach you bad habbits. No clear answer, select somebdoy you trust and follow their contributions.
CSA is not a mandatory but truth is that without CSA and no SN experience, you will have no chance (sorry but it's like that), imagine getting job like running a marathon race, CSA is selecting shoes in the shop, not even having the shoes put on :(( so many people have CSA so it doesn't give you any advantage. It must be supported by more CIS exams or direct experience. CSA standalone is meaningless in terms of being hired :((
Your own portfolio, github or request a PDI (SN demo instance for free), create an app, create something, think of some idea how to use SN, it doesn't need to be perfect, show that you can do stuff; show some other skills - communication, scripting, agile methodology, ... also languages if you speak any other languages.
Yes, as seen above, PDI is strongly recommended, it gives you the playground to learn, you cannot learn without mistakes, here you cannot break anything, so it's optimal to try things out,
i don't think there's not any roadmap, try to be the best version of yourself and don't compare with others, compare with yourself of yesterday, be patient. Don't stop when a failure comes, rather do better next time.
