question Re: New parent topic not showing in mega menu in Employee Slate and Employee Center forum

When you clone or create a new parent taxonomy, you need to link it to the portals on which you want to display it. A related list on the taxonomy form is hidden by default and lists these relationships. They link to the Portal Taxonmies table
m2m_sp_portal_taxonomy
. I had cloned a new employee center portal. I noticed that none of the existing menu items showed up because the topmost taxonomy structure was not associated with that new portal.

New parent topic not showing in mega menu

I created a new employee taxonomy (rather than cloning the OOB one), and then created 3 parent topics of IT, HR, and Marketing under it, then created all the associated child topics of those and associated relevant content to all of the child topics, and everything was showing as expected.

Client has decided they want a single overall parent topic that IT, HR, and Marketing will become child topics of, instead of having them as the 3 parent topics. So I create the new overall parent topic, add it to my employee taxonomy, and then add it into the parent topic field on IT, HR, and Marketing topics so that they are now children of this new parent.

The problem is that the new overall parent topic doesn't display in the mega menu, and the 3 now children topics still do. The configuration is exactly the same as when there were 3 parent topics except there's just 1 instead of 3, so in theory I should be seeing the 1 overall parent topic in the mega menu and then IT, HR, and Marketing when I click the mega menu. What am I missing? Will it not display the parent topic if there's only 1? Or did I do something else wrong?

Hi Sarah,

Can you please make sure parent-child relationship is correct and also make sure there is at least one connected content link to topics. If you have already taken care of parent-child relations plus connected content and still don't see reflection then would suggest creating new taxonomy and linking the new taxonomy to the EC portal.

Please mark as correct answer or helpful if the provided response resolves your query!

There's also a weird cache issue I notice when making changes to the mega menu. Try impersonating someone and see if it shows up or open a new private tab and check.

I didn't think about trying impersonation/private tab, but I had tried clearing the cache in SNow, which didn't work. However, happy to report that being patient and waiting overnight and then checking again did work.

I assume it's similar to when you associate content to a topic and it lets you know an event is running to associate it all; there was just no notification telling me moving all the content under the new parent topic would take some time (although I probably should've figured that).

We are seeing the same issue on San Diego after implementing Employee Center - When a topic name is changed, that change will not display on the portal until a day or so later *or* if we impersonate a user as you suggested. Have you found why this is in the meantime? Or any other workarounds to refresh this 'cache'?

Hi Sarah, I had a similar issue, and pretty much similar observation as I could not see my changes on the taxonomy structure didn't appear on the EC Portal as expected (Logged Out), but it came up when I checked on the following Monday (Log In), which means I did re-login. So, the response from Avinash in the following response trail makes sense that "Topic names are cached and you need to logout and login again to reflect the newly created / edited Topic", which is also supported by the response from Kelly as "You can shortcut this sometimes by impersonating another user to recache". I just tried the later approach by impersonating as my work colleague, and it showed all child topics as expected. Thanks for posting the query and thanks to Avinash and Kelly for answers fixing the problem.

Hi @Sarah Deady Employee Center sometimes get's stuck in cache, whereby when you make certain element changes they don't reflect straight away.

I can see you already got it sorted. Impersonating was a good shout, as it's my quick trick. When you impersonate a user through EC, it actually forces a cache refresh. So it's a quick way to ensure elements are updated.

The other more common method is to log out and then back in.

Not actually sure if the caching is something we should get better with, or if its a Chrome thing. I notice doesn't happen that much on other browsers.
