Populating Azure Tag value in CMDB

Hi,

In my Azure account I have some VM's and each of VM's have asset tags , for eg. Company Location tag which is used to store location of my company . Using Discovery I have achieved cloud based integration of Azure - CMDB .

But for every Virtual machine instance asset tags are available in Azure, whereas in ServiceNow Asset tag with respect to VM is not available or not fetched from Azure. Please help to get this Asset Tag in sync with Azure.

Hi Alias,

The OOB discovery does not fetch that information from Azure for VMs so you will have to customize the pattern to get the info and set it to the VM instance table. Below are the things which are discovered OOB for azure discovery.

1.You can do that by going to Discovery Patterns from Pattern Designer in left navigation.

2.Select the pattern 'Azure - Virtual Machine (LP)' from list of patterns and open the record.

3. Add Extension step to the pattern.

4. Inside the extension steps you can write your steps to get the azure tag and set it to your vm instance table.

All tags for the virtual machine should be already coming in via discovery pattern (or via CAPI if you are using CAPI discovery). we pick up the cloud tags by default. the pattern extension is already present.

Note that these discovered cloud tags are stored in cmdb_key_value table. These will appear in the related list for the virtual machine record, please add the key-value from related list configuration.

The discovery will not update your asset tag field directly. To update your asset tag field, you would need an additional step - maybe you can have a Business Rule to update the CI's asset tag field, or you could also modify the pattern.

Hi! Are you using any tool to populate the tags? I'd propose taking a look at zigiops. I can make the connection between the two systems bi-directionally. It can be tweaked to execute your use cases. Check it out.

Hi,

You already have the pattern steps available in your pattern extension steps to fetch the Azure tags. Now this value is going to cmdb_key_value table and it is getting populated automatically via above extension step.

All what you need to do is, go to your cmdb_ci_vm_instance record and in the header do right click -> Configure -> Related Lists-> (Key Value->Configuration Item).

And then you will be able to see the list of records in that related list associated to your CI. You need to write a Business Rule on cmdb_key_value table.

This will update your azure tags into the Asset Tag field and you will be able to see the comma separated azure tags.

Hi Rahul,

I don't know why you are not getting tags for Azure VM. it is standard functionality, so i can give some general guidance unless you have some additional information/errors to show.

Are you on CAPI or Patterns discovery - if you are on CAPI, please move to Patterns for cloud resources Discovery. CAPI based discovery is not getting extended, only Patterns going forward.

After that please update to latest patterns app from the store and check if you still don't get tags. the tags pattern extension should be available in Azure VM (LP) pattern - check if you get any errors during discovery.

BTW - this is regardless of whether you have CPG or Discovery license - same thing applies in both cases.

Hi Mohit,

I am new to servicenow discovery but i have good exposure in BMC discovery.

Here is SN discovery, my client wants to see the Azure Tags in to CMDB.

we want Tags value to be visible on cmdb_ci_resource_group.

While scanning the Azure VM, in the ECC queue, cant see pattern "Azure VM (LP)" is executing.

Can you please guide me step by step how to achieve this ?

Hi @Girija Sankar G ,

The reason you are not able to see that pattern in ECC queue could be the discovery running on CAPI and not patterns. So, first thing you should migrate the discovery to pattern based which can be done with the help of below KB article. Once done you should be able to see this pattern getting executed and based on my previous responses on this post, you can have a business rule to populate the tags from cmdb key value table to your CI.

After migrated CAPI to pattern based discovery, now able to see the tags value under key value table.

Now couple of things would like to know:

1) Are these tags(key value) will be visible in all table including cmdb_ci ? or is there any specific table where these tags info will only be visible?

2) To update the Asset Tag, can you please help me to write business rule

3) If we update the Asset Tag, will it show on all table for e.g. cmdb_ci or cmdb_ci_resource_group etc

tag (key-value) records appear in related list - if not appearing out of the box, you can customize the layout to show key-value -> configuration item related list. the underlying table is cmdb_key_value

This BR will help you update the asset tag on all the CI tables. I have already shared the BR which you will have to write on cmdb_key_value table in my previous replies on this question thread. Shared it again below:

I have created the same BR as suggested for Asset Tag update on cmdb_ci (PFA the screenshot attached)

Ran the discovery.

Can see Tags values showing on cmdb_key_value table and updated it into Related list of Virtual Machine Instance class. It shows correct.

But still i cant see the tag value on cmdb_ci table.

Is there anything i am missing here.
