## Summary of Workflow editor

The Workflow Editor in ServiceNow is a user interface designed for creating and modifying workflows by arranging and connecting activities to automate processes.
It allows users to manage multiple workflows, create custom activities, and utilize existing activities as data sources, enhancing process automation capabilities.
Show full answer Show less
Note that since the Zurich release, new customers no longer receive legacy workflows by default, as Workflow Studio has replaced legacy workflow functionality. While legacy workflows can still be created or edited by customers who upgraded from previous versions, ServiceNow strongly recommends using Workflow Studio for new automation content because only it receives ongoing feature enhancements.

Users with the **workflowcreator** role can create workflows, while those with the **workflowadmin** role can create, modify, delete, and publish workflows.

## Access and Interface

To open the Workflow Editor, navigate to **Workflow \> Workflow Editor**. It is recommended to use the Core UI for the best experience, as the Next Experience UI does not fully support the classic Workflow Editor.

The editor opens to a Welcome screen displaying active, published workflows, with options to open existing workflows, create new ones, and access help resources. Filters allow you to view published workflows or those checked out to the current user.

## Workflow Canvas and Palette

Once a workflow is opened or created, you interact with it on the workflow canvas, which provides a drawing surface to add activities and configure transitions. Activities and subflows can be dragged from the palette to the canvas to build or modify workflows.

* **Canvas tabs:** Manage multiple workflows being edited.
* **Title bar:** Shows workflow name and status (e.g., Checked out, Published) and offers controls for configuration, testing, and validation.
* **Palette tabs:** Organize workflow activities into categories such as Workflows, Core, Packs (for orchestration activities), Custom, and Data sources (visible if orchestration plugin is installed).

The default palette includes workflow activities and existing workflows available as subflows, enabling modular and reusable process design.

## Additional Notes

If the Welcome page appearance differs from the Brazil release example, it may be due to prior customizations. You can update it by reverting the relevant UI page to the Brazil release version through System UI settings.

The Workflow Editor supports keyboard navigation and accessibility features to accommodate users with disabilities.
The Workflow Editor is an interface for creating and modifying workflows by arranging
and connecting activities to drive processes.
Important:
As of the Zurich release, new customers no longer receive the legacy workflows created and published by ServiceNow, Inc.. All legacy workflow functionality has been replaced by Workflow Studio content. Only customers who upgraded from prior versions retain the ability to use and edit existing legacy workflows. While all customers retain the ability to create legacy workflows, you are strongly encouraged to instead use Workflow Studio to create process automation content. Only Workflow Studio will receive new features and enhancements.

You can manage multiple workflows in the same screen, create custom workflow activities,
and use existing activities as data sources. Users with the workflow_creator role can create
workflows. Users with the workflow_admin role can create, modify, delete, and publish
workflows.
To open the Workflow Editor, navigate to WorkflowWorkflow Editor. For information about using the editor, see [Create a workflow](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/BfRwcc93XyZ2joCkheJBfQ "Automate a multi-step process by creating a workflow with the Workflow Editor.").
Warning:
The Next Experience UI does not fully support the classic Workflow Editor. For the best UI experience, use the Core UI instead.
