Use Assistant Designer to build and optimize large language model (LLM) assistants for your conversational needs. Assistant Designer is a centralized assistant administrator experience that allows you to create and manage both chat and voice assistants.

## Before you begin

See [Assistant Designer](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/guTDLSGgcOKu3pE3nWAgHA "Create, configure, manage, and test LLM-based chat and voice assistants within Assistant Designer, a centralized assistant administrator experience.").

Role required: virtual_agent_admin or admin

## About this task

An admin can create and configure more than one chat or voice assistant within [Assistant Designer](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/guTDLSGgcOKu3pE3nWAgHA "Create, configure, manage, and test LLM-based chat and voice assistants within Assistant Designer, a centralized assistant administrator experience.").

For chat assistants, a primary assistant can be linked to one or more secondary assistants. The linkage enables a primary assistant to use search sources from secondary assistants, enhancing its functionality and efficiency.
For more information on primary and secondary assistants, see [LLM assistants](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/PCYXDl7tZHGT5YEKQunO1Q "LLM assistants help with large language model (LLM) topic discovery. The Now Assist in Virtual Agent assistant is the default LLM assistant created during the Conversational Interfaces Assistants guided setup."). If multiple assistants are created, users can chat simultaneously with multiple assistants. Conversations are independent from each other.

Each assistant can have more than one display experience, using either the standard chat or enhanced chat experience, depending on the display experience that's configured. Enhanced chat offers a conversational search
experience that seamlessly integrates Virtual Agent chat with search results. For more information, see [Standard chat](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/YB5S3NT9d3bYyIUB6hA7xQ "Now Assist in Virtual Agent standard chat is a conversational support experience within a static chat window.") or [Enhanced chat](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/akeq3Ll~Ie02tJ2Solvobw "Now Assist in Virtual Agent enhanced chat is a conversational support experience within a dynamic window that also includes the ability to have multiple active conversations and superior search capabilities. Turning on enhanced chat's full-page experience further combines chat and search capabilities by redirecting you into a full-page chat after entering a query into a portal's search bar."). For a comparison of the two, see [Using Now Assist in Virtual Agent](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/3cJzG0GDV87y0ELIahTpIg "Now Assist in Virtual Agent enhances the user experience by combining AI Search with generative AI chat skills. These skills can speed up issue resolution and reduce deflection to a live agent.").

When configuring a chat assistant, notes throughout the procedures show where there are differences between the setup for Now Assist in Virtual Agent assistants and the setup for Now Assist panel assistants. Additional Now Assist panel assistants can't be created.

For voice assistants, a voice assistant can be mapped to one or more AI agents. The linkage enables a voice assistant to leverage agentic capabilities to resolve user queries over phone.
