Upload or drag files into Now Assist in Virtual Agent to extract relevant data from a file. The assistant analyzes and understands the content of the files, and you can ask questions about the content of the files or get a summary.

## Before you begin

Now Assist in Virtual Agent standard and enhanced chat support uploading documents to the assistant. For more information about the different chat capabilities, see [Standard chat](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/YB5S3NT9d3bYyIUB6hA7xQ "Now Assist in Virtual Agent standard chat is a conversational support experience within a static chat window.") and [Enhanced chat](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/akeq3Ll~Ie02tJ2Solvobw "Now Assist in Virtual Agent enhanced chat is a conversational support experience within a dynamic window that also includes the ability to have multiple active conversations and superior search capabilities. Turning on enhanced chat's full-page experience further combines chat and search capabilities by redirecting you into a full-page chat after entering a query into a portal's search bar."). Uploading a document within a chat is available to you when an admin activates this feature in the admin guided setup. For more information, see [Configuring assistants overview](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/Iq8pGh6Fvy4~YMEuJyerJQ "Use Assistant Designer to build and optimize large language model (LLM) assistants for your conversational needs. Assistant Designer is a centralized assistant administrator experience that allows you to create and manage both chat and voice assistants.").

Uploaded file formats include text and image files such as PDF, Word (.doc, .docx), JPEG, and PNG. The maximum size of a file is 5 megabytes (MB).

## Procedure

1. Navigate to the portal home page that is using Now Assist in Virtual Agent.
2. Launch the Now Assist in Virtual Agent chat window.
3. Select the paperclip icon to upload the file or drag the file into the chat.
One or more files can be uploaded to the chat. The maximum number of files that can be uploaded is three. You see the progress as the file uploads, until its completion. If the file fails to upload, or the content
can't be properly parsed, take corrective action.

The file is checked for viruses, and an error message appears when a file is non-security compliant. After the file passes the virus scan, the document is secure, and sensitive data isn't retained beyond the chat
session. You can't ask follow-up questions about the file after the chat session ends.

4. To ask questions about another file, exit the chat, and upload or drag a new file to the assistant.
