# Modify or retire a standard change template

# Modify or retire a standard change template {#ariaid-title1}

You can modify and retire standard change templates based on your organization's
requirements.

## Before you begin

Role required: admin, change_manager, sn_change_write or itil

## Procedure

1. Navigate to AllChangeStandard ChangeAll Templates.
2. Select the template you want to modify or retire and perform the following steps.

   | Option | Description |
   | Modify a standard change template | 1. Select Modify Template under Related Links. 2. Enter your modifications in the Modify a Standard Change Template form. {#manage-standard-change-template__ol_yqd_ylx_5w} Note: You can modify any field in the standard change template, and send for approval. After the modifications are saved and approved, a new version of the standard change template is created. Change requests created from the modified standard change template reflects the modifications made. Important: You can change fields such as Assignment group and Assigned to on the template. The updated values apply only to change requests created after the new template version is approved. For more information on how the default and copied field values are configured see [Configure standard change catalog properties](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/PtOJF3ijGmNmpk3kNRT7Xw "Configure the standard change catalog through the standard change properties."). |
   | Retire a standard change template | 1. Select Retire Template under Related Links. 2. Enter your business justification to retire the specific template in the Retire a Standard Change Template form. {#manage-standard-change-template__ol_n5w_b4x_5w} Note: The standard change template is deactivated, and it is no longer be available for creating new change requests. |

3. Perform one of the following actions:
   * Select Save. The modifications are saved but not sent for approval.
   * SelectRequest Approval. The template is sent for approval to the change management team.
