AI Search can index searchable content and metadata from multiple variable types found on indexed source records.

## Variable types indexed from variables column {#variable-types-ais-index__section_qhf_y5v_52c}

When indexing records from any source table, AI Search retrieves searchable content from supported variable types when they're present in a source record column that has name variables and type Variables.
Supported variable types include:

* Email
* Multi-line text
* Single-line text
* URL
* Wide single-line text
{#variable-types-ais-index__ul_lly_3x5_jvb}

## Service Catalog variable types indexed from Catalog Items {#variable-types-ais-index__section_cxd_1vv_52c}

When indexing records from the Catalog Item \[sc_cat_item\] table and tables that extend it, AI Search can retrieve searchable content from these Service Catalog variable types:

* [Multiple choice](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/access?context=multiple-choice&version=zurich&pubname=zurich-servicenow-platform&ft:locale=en-US)
* [Select box](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/access?context=select-box&version=zurich&pubname=zurich-servicenow-platform&ft:locale=en-US)
{#variable-types-ais-index__ul_p4y_k5v_52c}

Other variable types aren't supported for catalog variable indexing.

Catalog variable indexing is not active in the base system, but it's activated if you've installed the
ServiceNow Otto® for
AI Search application. To learn how to activate and configure catalog variable indexing, see [Activate indexing of catalog variable content on Catalog Item records](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/GaozVk_PDmg7GNQkPq804g "Activate indexing of searchable content from variables on Catalog Item records. Configure the set of Catalog Items eligible for catalog variable indexing and the set of variables to index."). For details on the
ServiceNow Otto for
AI Search application, see [ServiceNow Otto for AI Search](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/xoCugQNhuHdig2vc_rkRbw "The ServiceNow Otto for AI Search application combines the power of search with a large language model (LLM) to provide actionable AI-generated or AI-selected answers in user searches. By constraining the context passed to the LLM, ServiceNow Otto for AI Search can increase the likelihood that LLM responses are grounded in indexed content.").

For the full list of available Service Catalog variable types, see [Types of Service Catalog variables](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/access?context=r_VariableTypes&version=zurich&pubname=zurich-servicenow-platform&ft:locale=en-US).
