## New Features

* **Continuous Authentication** (Yokohama): Enforces step-up or re-authentication before granting access to sensitive or high-privilege data.
* **OAuth Grant Types for MID Server** (Yokohama): Supports Authorization code, resource owner password credential, SAML bearer, and JWT bearer OAuth grant types for outbound integrations via MID Server.
* **Machine Identity Console** (Zurich): Simplifies inbound integration configuration for managing machine identities.
* **Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) Dashboard and Guided Setup** (Zurich): Provides insights into MFA enrollment, admin compliance, and guides admins to enable MFA for users who currently use only username/password.
* **OIDC Attributes as Filters** (Zurich): Allows use of Identity Provider attributes from OIDC responses as authentication filters.
* **Authentication Factors for AI Voice Service** (Australia): Enables configuring caller authentication using multiple factors for AI voice agents, including step-up authentication for sensitive requests.
* **Web Embeddables Security** (Australia): Secures authentication of ServiceNow web components embedded in third-party portals.
* **Granular Admin Roles** (Australia): Allows developers and administrators to perform Authentication configuration tasks without full admin privileges.

## Changes

* **MFA Enforcement** (Yokohama): MFA is mandated for all non-SSO login users.
* **Coral Theme** (Zurich): Introduces a new default, brand-neutral theme with light and dark mode options for portals, web, and mobile experiences.
* **Enhanced SSO Login and Logout Experience** (Zurich): Displays active SAML/OIDC Identity Providers on login pages, supports group assignments during auto-provisioning, shows login failure reasons, and improves logout behavior and related notifications.
* **FIDO2 MFA Factor** (Zurich): Enables hardware key or biometric second-factor authentication enforcement.
* **OAuth Enhancements** (Yokohama, Zurich, Australia): Supports longer client secrets, JWKS URL for key management, multiple signing algorithms, customizable JWT claims, and scoped API access for inbound integrations. Also introduces OAuth Entity Resource configuration for outbound integrations.

## Deprecations

* Inbound integration configurations via Application Registry for OAuth API endpoint, OAuth JWT API endpoint, and OIDC provider verification are deprecated in favor of the Machine Identity Console's simplified inbound integration configuration (Australia).
* The property `glide.login.noblankpassword` is deprecated as it no longer affects login behavior.

## Authentication Factors and AI Voice Service Enhancements

* Support for Email OTP, Knowledge-Based Authentication (KBA) with voice input, and script-based validation for external systems.
* Human-assisted SMS OTP allows agents to verify user identity during live interactions via SMS one-time passcodes.
* Step-up authentication enables callers already authenticated to complete additional challenges (e.g., Okta Verify push, SMS code, TOTP) before sensitive AI voice agent interactions.
* Caller verification can be configured to prompt authentication at the start of every AI voice call.

## Activation and Requirements

* Authentication is active by default as a ServiceNow AI Platform product across Yokohama, Zurich, and Australia releases.
* No additional browser or localization requirements were introduced with this upgrade.

## Accessibility and Usability

* The Coral theme improves accessibility and user experience with brand-neutral illustrations and light/dark modes for various interfaces.

## Practical Implications for ServiceNow Customers

* Upgrade preparation should include reviewing pre- and post-upgrade tasks specific to Authentication.
* Leverage the new MFA Dashboard and Guided Setup to enhance security by ensuring comprehensive MFA adoption.
* Use granular admin roles to delegate Authentication configuration tasks without granting full admin rights, enhancing security and operational efficiency.
* Transition inbound integrations to the Machine Identity Console for simplified management and to avoid deprecated configurations.
* Implement enhanced OAuth capabilities to meet modern security requirements and better control API access.
* Optimize AI voice service security using new multi-factor and knowledge-based authentication options, including step-up challenges for sensitive transactions.
* Secure web embeddables used in third-party portals to protect embedded ServiceNow components.

## New features

Between your current release family and Australia, new features were introduced for Authentication.
{#dfrn3-authentication-summary__entry__10}

| Release | Release notes |
|-|-|
| Yokohama | [Continuous Authentication](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/access?context=ca-homepage&family=yokohama&ft:locale=en-US) : Use Continuous Authentication to require step-up authentication or re-authentication to the users before allowing access to sensitive or high-privilege information. [OAuth Grant Types for MID Server](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/access?context=oauth-outbound&family=yokohama&ft:locale=en-US) : Use the Authorization code, resource owner password credential, SAML bearer, and JWT bearer OAuth grant types of OAuth for outbound integration requests through the MID Server. Personal Auth is also supported through the MID server. MID Servers facilitate communication and data movement between a single ServiceNow® instance and external applications, data sources, and services. |
| Zurich | [Machine Identity Console](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/access?context=machine-identity-console&family=zurich&ft:locale=en-US) : Manage your inbound integration with ServiceNow's Machine Identity Console. Inbound integration in Machine Identity Console provides a simplified configuration experience for your inbound integrations. [Multi-factor Authentication dashboard](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/access?context=mfa-dashboard&family=zurich&ft:locale=en-US) : Use the new MFA Dashboard to understand insights such as MFA user enrollment, privileged admins who haven't opted in to MFA, and compliance. You can verify that all users have MFA enabled for enhanced security with the help of the MFA Dashboard. [Multi-factor Authentication Guided Setup](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/access?context=mfa-guided-setup&family=zurich&ft:locale=en-US) : Use the new MFA Guided setup to configure multi-factor Authentication (MFA) for users who currently log in to ServiceNow with only a user name and password.
