## Summary of Integrating Virtual Agent with messaging apps

ServiceNow enables users to run Virtual Agent bot conversations within supported third-party messaging apps by using Conversational Integration applications.
These apps, available on the ServiceNow Store, integrate Virtual Agent with platforms such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, Workplace, Twilio, WhatsApp, and Google Assistant.
This integration allows seamless chatbot interactions within familiar messaging environments, enhancing user engagement and support efficiency.

## Admin Setup and Configuration

* Install the Conversational Integration apps from the ServiceNow Store and associate them with your ServiceNow instance.
* Configure system messages and customize common commands (e.g., **hi** , **agent** , **bye** , **help** , **logout**) used in chat interactions to tailor the user experience.
* Manage channel settings and contextual actions through the ServiceNow interface to fine-tune conversation behavior.
* Customize Virtual Agent system messages to align with organizational tone and workflows.
* Note that on-premises instances do not support these integrations for Slack, Microsoft Teams, and consumer or voice apps.

## Conversational Interface and User Experience

* The Virtual Agent interface in messaging apps closely mirrors the web-based experience but includes some platform-specific differences in commands and controls.
* Input controls like carousels and bot response formats (images, multi-responses) render differently depending on the messaging app.
* Users and live agents can exchange attachments during live chat sessions.
* Account linking between messaging app users and ServiceNow profiles enables personalized and secure interactions; users can auto-link or manually link/unlink accounts.
* Administrators can redirect user authentication to a Service Portal for unauthenticated users before engaging with Virtual Agent.
* Topic visibility can be controlled per messaging channel using condition scripts to suppress or display specific Virtual Agent topics.

## Supported Messaging Platforms and Capabilities

* **Microsoft Teams and Slack:** Full support including integration with ServiceNow Otto and synthesized responses.
* **WhatsApp (Twilio and Cloud API), SMS/Twilio, Google Chat:** Support Virtual Agent conversations; synthesized response support varies.
* Additional integrations include Apple Messages for Business, Facebook Messenger, LINE, and Conversational SMS with AWS End User Messaging.
* Each integration app supports connecting requesters to Virtual Agents or live agents within the respective messaging platforms.

## Key Outcomes for ServiceNow Customers

* Extend Virtual Agent capabilities into popular messaging platforms, increasing accessibility and convenience for end users.
* Provide consistent and customizable chatbot experiences across multiple communication channels.
* Enable secure, authenticated interactions through account linking and optional Service Portal authentication flow.
* Leverage pre-built integration apps to reduce implementation effort and accelerate deployment.
* Control user experience details such as commands, system messages, and topic visibility to meet organizational requirements.

## Conversational interface in messaging integrations {#va-integration-messaging-apps__section_bpm_2zf_q4b}

The Virtual Agent interface for the Conversational Integration apps (Slack,
Microsoft Teams, and Workplace) is similar to the web-based interface. However, there are
some differences, such as commands used and how certain interface controls are displayed in
these third-party messaging apps.

Common commands in messaging integrations
:   {#va-integration-messaging-apps__table_cpm_2zf_q4b__entry__2}

Configuring Virtual Agent system messaging in the Conversational
Integration apps
: You can modify the default messages displayed to your users in Virtual Agent and Agent Chat conversations. For details about customizing them, see [Change Virtual Agent and Agent Chat system messages](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/pZ2ectRudPMGApqT6EvIpA "Customize the default system messages displayed during Virtual Agent conversations and Agent Chat.").

Rendering of input controls and bot responses in conversations
: Input controls in Assistant Designer, such as the Carousel, render differently in bot conversations in messaging apps than in the web-based interface. Certain bot response controls, such as the Image response and
Multi-response controls, also render differently in third-party messaging apps. For details about these differences, see the descriptions of the Assistant Designer
[input controls](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/kvFNptsDpMYs5QDoK1JJqg "Use the collection of input controls provided by Assistant Designer to prompt and capture information from the user in a conversation."), [bot responses](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/dTEaoofyLRlOPgwbBeKfpg "Assistant Designer offers various controls for displaying bot responses in a conversation. Because the bot responses occur in third-party platforms, the format for each output may vary."), and [utilities](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/NzIRUd9yynf0Gzbx0H9RxQ "You can control interactions within a topic by using utilities in Assistant Designer. These utilities perform various actions such as adding topic blocks (reusable components), running a script, or adding different conversation paths (branches) in a topic. Utilities are represented as nodes in a conversation flow but do not display anything to the user.").

Attachments
: In live agent conversations, users and agents can upload and exchange any type of
    attachment file when prompted.

* **[Redirect user authentication to a Service Portal](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/gRgmqvoxOGODEpQP2X8tQg)**
After installing a pre-built Conversational Integration, you can specify a Service Portal in which unauthenticated end users complete the user authentication step (user account linking), instead of in their ServiceNow instance. Users who do not have linked accounts complete authentication before continuing with Virtual Agent in the messaging application.

In Virtual Agent, account linking maps the users of a supported chat or messaging application to their ServiceNow user profile. Account auto-linking authenticates your messaging users, which enables users to automatically access Virtual Agent topics that involve ServiceNow records. If needed, users can also manually unlink from or link to their ServiceNow accounts.
* **[Control topic visibility in Virtual Agent messaging channels](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/PvVkuj5YFf1Ztrwgc4Tr1g)**
