## Summary of Scenario Planning for PPM

The Scenario Planning for PPM application offers portfolio managers a centralized tool to create, compare, and manage project execution roadmaps for a fiscal year.
It enables optimization of budgets and resource usage by allowing the creation of multiple scenarios incorporating different demands and projects.
Each scenario represents a planning instance to support funding decisions and strategic alignment.

**Important:** Starting with the Brazil release, this application is slated for future deprecation---it will be hidden and unavailable for activation but will still receive support. ServiceNow recommends using the Strategic Planning Workspace (for SPM Pro users) or Portfolio Planning Workspace (for SPM Standard users) for scenario planning capabilities going forward.

## Key Features

* Plan portfolios based on resource capacity for single or multiple fiscal years, breaking down multi-year plans into manageable windows for continuous tracking.
* Allocate budget to demands and projects using Investment Funding or target budget settings when not integrated.
* Create multiple scenario-based plans to experiment with different project and demand combinations.
* Apply filters to refine selections and view details of demands/projects misaligned with strategic goals.
* Edit funding allocations per scenario.
* Compare scenarios using what-if analysis to identify plans that best meet budget and resource targets.
* Confirm or override planning scenarios to reflect changing priorities and finalize portfolio plans.
* Track budget details, resource utilization, and over-allocated resources within portfolios.

## Practical Considerations for ServiceNow Customers

* Scenario Planning is not supported in Portfolio Workbench, which offers simple or advanced planning but has been deprecated for new customers since the Paris release.
* If transitioning from Portfolio Workbench to Scenario Planning for PPM, remove the Portfolio Workbench module to prevent conflicts and data corruption.
* Existing demand and project selections in portfolios appear as a default scenario for scenario planning.
* Installation is available via the ServiceNow Store, where customers can also find release notes and request apps.

## Expected Outcomes

By leveraging Scenario Planning for PPM, portfolio managers can make informed, strategic funding and resource decisions through scenario comparisons. This leads to optimized budget allocation, improved resource utilization, and enhanced ability to track progress against fiscal goals. Customers can expect a more flexible and analytical approach to portfolio planning, though they should consider migrating to the recommended newer workspaces due to deprecation plans.
The Scenario Planning for PPM application provides a central location for
portfolio managers to create and track the roadmap for project execution for a given fiscal year.
Optimize your budget and resource usage by creating and comparing different scenarios for your
project and demand roadmap or resources.
Important:
Starting with Brazil release, Scenario Planning for PPM (com.snc.ppm_scenario_planning) is being prepared for future deprecation. It will be hidden and no longer available for activation but will continue to be supported. For details, see the [Deprecation Process \[KB0867184\]](https://hi.service-now.com/kb_view.do?sysparm_article=KB0867184) article in the Now Support knowledge base.

Alternatively, Strategic Planning Workspace (for SPM pro users) or Portfolio Planning Workspace (for SPM standard users) provides the Scenario Planning capability. For details, see [Scenario planning in Strategic Planning](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/alewxx4SKdatoHNer9keOw "Create and evaluate strategic scenarios to explore different planning approaches. Approve the optimal scenario that aligns with the organizational goals and strategic priorities.") or [Scenario planning in Portfolio Planning](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/s9MEzeFoG_cgQEZaqzzJ~A "Create and evaluate strategic scenarios to explore different planning approaches. Approve the optimal scenario that aligns with the organizational goals and strategic priorities.").

A scenario is a collection of demands and projects that serves as a planning instance for the
selected fiscal year to support funding decisions.

Eligible demands and projects in the portfolio are collected into a default or existing
scenario of the planning cycle. You use the default or existing scenario as a basis to create
additional scenarios. A demand or project can belong to more than one scenario in the current
planning cycle but it cannot belong to more than one portfolio. For more information, see [Create planning scenarios](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/PTt4lTKVTLENzaDMXXzFcA "Create planning scenarios with different combinations of projects and demands in your portfolio. Experiment with different scenarios to plan your budget expenditure for a fiscal year.").

## Impact on portfolio planning using Portfolio Workbench {#portfolio-planning-overview__section_chr_z3h_jlb}

Portfolio Workbench does not support a scenario-based portfolio planning. You can plan your
portfolio in simple or advanced planning modes. In advanced mode, you can repromote budget plan
and create a forecast plan. Starting with the Paris release, the Portfolio
Workbench has been deprecated for new customers. For more information, see [Portfolio
Workbench](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/0wIg~JN~ggxrYrrhYtid3A "The portfolio workbench provides a central location for viewing a list of associated demands and projects, planning a portfolio, and tracking its progress. Portfolio workbench is deprecated in the Paris release. Portfolio workbench is still available on instances upgraded from a previous release but is not available for new instances.").

With scenario-based planning, you can create multiple scenarios, compare them, and confirm or
reconfirm a scenario.
If you are using the Portfolio Workbench for portfolio planning and want to switch to a scenario-based planning, note the following points:

* After installing Scenario Planning for PPM, remove the Portfolio Workbench module and related link from the Portfolio form. The de-activation of Portfolio Workbench is required to avoid conflicts with two methods of planning and data corruption. For more information, see [Enable or disable an application menu or
  module](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/access?context=t_EnDisableAppMenuOrMod&version=brazil&pubname=brazil-platform-user-interface&ft:locale=en-US).
* Use the Portfolio Planning related link or the Portfolio Planning Workbench module to navigate to Portfolio Planning Workbench.
* All your existing selections of demands and projects for a portfolio appear as a default scenario when you open the Portfolio Planning Workbench.
