# Use the ReadFromFile component

Read an image file from its path and name and return the image as an output by using
the ReadFromFile component in RPA Desktop Design Studio.

## About this task

You can configure the properties for the ReadFromFile component. For more information
about these properties, see [Properties of the Image Utilities components](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/JLDG~BNnU_7Z~QG3H7AmxQ "Learn about the properties of the Image Utilities components in RPA Desktop Design Studio.").

## Procedure

1. In the Toolbox pane, navigate to UtilitiesImage Utilities.
2. Drag the ReadFromFile component to the Design surface.
3. Configure the input field, see [Configure port properties](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/d92L75lHSFmmidzeOPPgTw "Configure how data is passed to the input fields of a component or method in RPA Desktop Design Studio.").
4. Connect the data and control ports of the ReadFromFile component to the corresponding ports of the other components as described in the following table.

   | Port type | Purpose of connection | Mandatory? |
   |-|-|-|
   | Data In (Filepath) | Takes the path to the image file and its name from a previously executed component. | No. Connecting the port is optional. |
   | Data Out | Returns the image as a bitmap and passes to the next component. | Yes. To preview the data, right-click the Return field and click Preview Data. |
   | Control In | Connects to the Control Out port of one or more components. | No. Connecting the port is optional. |
   | Control Out | Connects to the Control In port of any other component. | No. Connecting the port is optional. |

5. **Optional:** To test the component, under the DESIGN tab, click Run.
