## Summary of Service Graph Connector for OpenTelemetry

The Service Graph Connector for OpenTelemetry enables ServiceNow customers to ingest Configuration Management Database (CMDB) data directly from the ServiceNow Cloud Observability application using REST APIs.
This integration supports pushing monitoring events from Cloud Observability into ServiceNow Event Management, providing a unified operational view.
Although the connector will be deprecated starting with the Australia release and hidden from new instances, it remains supported for existing users.

## Use Cases

* Import project topologies from Cloud Observability to provide site reliability engineering (SRE) teams a consolidated view for triage alongside other ServiceNow data like change requests and incidents.
* Import events created by Cloud Observability to help pinpoint issues and support SRE triage activities effectively.

## Configuration and Monitoring

Customers can use the guided setup workflow to configure the integration on their ServiceNow instance, ensuring an organized and streamlined setup process. Monitoring of the integration is facilitated via the CMDB Integrations Dashboard provided by the Integration Commons for CMDB Store app. This dashboard offers a centralized view of integration status, processing outcomes, and errors, with filtering options by integration type, time frame, and specific runs.

## Data Mapping and Management

Data from Cloud Observability is mapped and transformed into CMDB Configuration Item (CI) classes using the Robust Transform Engine (RTE), and inserted into the CMDB with the Identification and Reconciliation Engine (IRE). Scheduled jobs pull data periodically from Cloud Observability into staging tables before mapping to target CMDB classes. Key data sources include:

* **OpenTelemetry Resources:** Kubernetes clusters, workloads, and application services mapped to various Kubernetes CI classes and Calculated Application Service.
* **OpenTelemetry Pods:** Kubernetes pods mapped to Kubernetes Pod and Cluster CIs.
* **OpenTelemetry Containers and Container Images:** Container data mapped to Docker Container and Image CIs.
* **OpenTelemetry Services:** Kubernetes services mapped to Kubernetes Service CIs.
* **OpenTelemetry Dependency Map:** Aggregated trace data imported and linked to Calculated Application Service classes. Inferred services require manual linking to CIs.

Customers can use the IntegrationHub ETL app to view and manage these data maps.

## Inferred Service Linking

The connector supports linking inferred services, identified by Cloud Observability spans calling remote services, to existing CIs within the CMDB. This manual linking process helps maintain accurate service relationships and improves the overall integrity of the service graph.

## Supported Versions and Additional Information

The connector supports ServiceNow versions Utah, Vancouver, and Washington DC. For comprehensive details on app versions, release notes, and Store submissions, customers should refer to the ServiceNow Store resources.
Use the Service Graph Connector for OpenTelemetry to ingest Configuration Management Database (CMDB) data from the ServiceNow Cloud Observability (formerly Lightstep)
application using REST APIs. Push events from the Cloud Observability
application into ServiceNow with Event Management.
Important:
Starting with the Australia release, Service Graph Connector for OpenTelemetry is being prepared for future deprecation. It will be hidden and no longer installed on new instances but will continue to be supported. For details, see the [Deprecation Process \[KB0867184\]](https://support.servicenow.com/kb_view.do?sysparm_article=KB0867184) article in the Now Support Knowledge Base.

## Use cases {#sgc-cmdb-integration-opentelemetry__section_gkq_wv3_dxb}

The following examples describe how you can use the Service Graph Connector for OpenTelemetry:

* Import project topologies from Cloud Observability so that the site reliability engineering (SRE) teams can have a single view for triage with other ServiceNow data points (such as a change request, an incident) from a single view.
* Import events created by Cloud Observability against monitored projects to pinpoint SRE triage activities.

## Guided setup {#sgc-cmdb-integration-opentelemetry__section_whm_5cr_sqb}

The guided setup for the Service Graph Connector for OpenTelemetry provides an organized sequence of tasks to configure the integration on your instance. To access the guided setup, see [Configure Service Graph Connector for OpenTelemetry](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/qHFEJ6IQlAeBMdAKJskAgQ "Set up scheduled import jobs to pull in data from ServiceNow Cloud Observability (formerly Lightstep) into your Configuration Management Database (CMDB).").

## CMDB integrations dashboard {#sgc-cmdb-integration-opentelemetry__section_anq_fww_prb}

The Integration Commons for CMDB store app provides a dashboard with a
central view of the status, processing results, and processing errors of all installed
integrations. You can see metrics for all integration runs. You can filter the view to a
specific CMDB integration, a specific time
duration, or a specific integration run. For more details about monitoring Cloud Observability integrations in the CMDB Integrations Dashboard, see [Using the CMDB Integrations Dashboard](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/6UR2b9oa6teU8Ntvkupjzg#integration-commons-for-cmdb__section_fxg_lh4_blb).

## Data mapping {#sgc-cmdb-integration-opentelemetry__section_j24_gww_prb}

Data from the Cloud Observability data sources is mapped and transformed into the ServiceNow
CMDB configuration item (CI) class definitions using the Robust Transform Engine (RTE). Data is inserted into the ServiceNow
CMDB using the Identification and Reconciliation Engine (IRE).

When you complete setting up the connection, you can configure the integration to pull data from the application periodically.
The following table describes the data sources, the scheduled jobs, the staging tables, and the target tables as CMDB CI classes for the Cloud Observability application.{#sgc-cmdb-integration-opentelemetry__table_udz_pgq_1bc__entry__5}

For more information on where data is saved when pulling data from Cloud Observability, see [CMDB classes targeted in Service Graph Connector for OpenTelemetry](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/3bOCBiUo3UhjBuFaVj7eHQ "When you complete setting up the connection, you can configure the integration to periodically pull data from ServiceNow Cloud Observability (formerly Lightstep). The data is saved in tables that extend from the Configuration item [cmdb_ci] table.").

You can use the IntegrationHub ETL app to view the data maps. See [IntegrationHub ETL](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/MvUnD_GHFcty25xoT_q32Q "Use the IntegrationHub ETL store app to create and manage ETL transform maps, which integrate third-party data into the CMDB or into non-CMDB tables without compromising the integrity of data. ## Inferred service linking {#sgc-cmdb-integration-opentelemetry__section_h12_fwb_sxb}

The ServiceNow
Cloud Observability application can infer the presence of an inferred
service when the span calling the remote service has the necessary information. Service Graph Connector for OpenTelemetry provides the linking of inferred services and
their related services with CIs in the CMDB.
For more information, see [Linking inferred services with CIs](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/w~~c5LeoUgErnXhPTE4FIA#sgc-cmdb-opentelemetry-services "Create inferred services relationships in your ServiceNow instance with other Cloud Observability application services as originally configured in the application by linking an inferred service configuration item (CI) in CMDB with an inferred service from the Cloud Observability application.").
