# Use the GetValueByRegex component

Specify a regular expression and characters to find characters that match by using
the GetValueByRegex component in RPA Desktop Design Studio.

## About this task

You can configure the properties for the GetValueByRegex component. For more
information about these properties, see [Properties of the String Utilities components](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/vch7LWSB4dWgOZqzdGBmwQ "Learn about the properties of the String Utilities components in RPA Desktop Design Studio.").

## Procedure

1. In the Toolbox pane, navigate to UtilitiesString Utilities.
2. Drag the GetValueByRegex component to the Design surface.
3. To configure the input fields, see [Configure port properties](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/d92L75lHSFmmidzeOPPgTw "Configure how data is passed to the input fields of a component or method in RPA Desktop Design Studio.").
4. Connect the data and control ports of the GetValueByRegex component to the corresponding ports of the other components as described in the following table.

   | Data In (Text) | Takes the text from a previously executed component. | Yes |
   | Data In (RegExpression) | Takes the regular expression from a previously executed component. | Yes |
   | Data Out (Boolean) | Returns the status of the regular expression matching in Boolean and passes to the next component. | Yes |
   | Data Out (List 1) | Returns the matched value. | Yes |
   | Control In | Connects to the Control Out port of one or more components. | Yes |
   | Control Out | Connects to the Control In port of another component or the default end component. | No |

5. **Optional:** To test the component, under the DESIGN tab, click Run.
