Azure Application Insight Component pattern-based discovery
Summarize
Summary of Azure Application Insight Component pattern-based discovery
The Azure Application Insight Component pattern-based discovery in ServiceNow’s Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns application identifies Azure Application Insight resources within your cloud environment. This discovery populates data into both CMDB and non-CMDB tables, enabling comprehensive visibility and management of your Azure Application Insights components.
To effectively use this pattern, ensure Microsoft Azure discovery prerequisites are met, and the relevant pattern is enabled (it is disabled by default). Starting with Visibility Content version 6.28.0, toggling patterns is no longer treated as a customization, allowing for seamless updates without losing active settings. For Azure GovCloud environments, configure the discovery schedule using the appropriate datacenter URL.
Key Features
- Pattern Activation: Enables discovery of Azure Application Insight components; must be activated to function.
- Data Population: Discovers and stores resource details in both CMDB tables (for core configuration items) and non-CMDB Azure-specific tables for extended inventory data.
- Key Tables and Fields:
- Non-CMDB Table (cmdbazureapplicationinsightcomponent): Contains detailed Azure-specific fields such as App ID, Application Type, Connection String, Instrumentation Key, Location, Provisioning State, Resource Group, Retention In Days, Subscription ID, Tenant ID, and Version.
- CMDB Table (cmdbcicmpresource): Records standard resource attributes including Install Status, Location, Name, Object ID, Operational Status, Resource Type (set to microsoft.insights/components), Description, and Version.
- Tag Discovery: Collects Azure tags and stores them in the Key Value [cmdbkeyvalue] table for enhanced metadata management.
- CI Relationships: Automatically establishes relationships between discovered CIs such as resource groups, cloud resources, Azure datacenters, and application insight components to accurately represent dependencies and hosting.
Practical Benefits for ServiceNow Customers
- Enables automated discovery and inventory of Azure Application Insight components, reducing manual effort and increasing data accuracy.
- Improves CMDB completeness with detailed Azure-specific resource information and relationships, supporting better service mapping and impact analysis.
- Supports compliance and governance by capturing and managing resource tags and configuration states.
- Facilitates discovery in specialized Azure environments such as GovCloud by allowing customized discovery schedules and configurations.
Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns finds Azure services on your cloud environment. Discovering some of these resources may require updating to the latest version of the Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns application from the ServiceNow Store.
Pattern-based discovery and mapping requirements
- Verify the Microsoft Azure discovery prerequisites
- For more information, see the prerequisites section in Microsoft Azure Cloud components discovery using patterns.
- Enable the relevant pattern
- The pattern for this service is disabled by default. Starting with Visibility Content version 6.28.0, activating or deactivating a pattern won't be considered a customization, and it will continue to receive updates. Patterns that were previously activated or deactivated will reset to the latest predefined version after upgrading while retaining the last active field value. For more information on enabling patterns, see Activate a disabled pattern.
- Configure the Discovery schedule to support GovCloud
- Discovering Azure GovCloud (US) accounts requires using a datacenter URL when setting up an Azure service account. For more information, see Set up Azure service accounts.

Data stored in non-CMDB tables
Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns application populate data in the non-CMDB table when running the Azure - Application Insight Component - Extended Inventory(LP) pattern.
You can review the non-CMDB Azure tables by navigating to . You can also search the navigation filter for the specific pattern name.
