Azure Recovery Services Vault pattern-based discovery

Summary of Azure Recovery Services Vault pattern-based discovery
This documentation explains how to discover Azure Recovery Services Vaults in your cloud environment using the Azure - Recovery Services Vault pattern within the ServiceNow Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns application. The pattern enables automated identification and mapping of Azure Recovery Services Vault resources, populating relevant data into both CMDB and non-CMDB tables in ServiceNow.

Key Features
- Pattern Activation: The Azure Recovery Services Vault discovery pattern is disabled by default. From Visibility Content version 6.28.0 onward, enabling or disabling patterns is easier and patterns receive updates without being treated as customizations.
- Discovery Prerequisites: Microsoft Azure discovery prerequisites must be met, such as proper permissions and setup of Azure service accounts. For Azure GovCloud (US), a datacenter URL must be specified in the service account configuration.
- Data Population: Discovered Azure Recovery Services Vault data is stored in two types of tables:
- Non-CMDB table [cmdbazurerecoveryservicesvault]: Stores detailed resource information such as object ID, kind, Azure region, resource group, subscription and tenant ID, and provisioning state.
- CMDB table [cmdbcicmpresource]: Stores cloud resource details like object ID, name, location, install and operational status, and resource type (set to microsoft.recoveryservices/vaults).
- CI Relationships: The pattern creates relationships between discovered Recovery Services Vaults, resource groups, cloud resources, and Azure datacenters to represent dependencies and hosting information accurately.
- Tag Collection: Azure tags associated with Recovery Services Vaults are collected and stored in the Key Value [cmdbkeyvalue] table, capturing tag names and values for enhanced resource metadata management.
Practical Benefits for ServiceNow Customers
- Automates discovery and inventory of Azure Recovery Services Vaults, ensuring accurate and up-to-date cloud resource data in your CMDB.
- Supports compliance and operational understanding by providing detailed resource metadata and relationships.
- Enables better cloud service management through integration with ServiceNow Discovery schedules and patterns, including support for Azure GovCloud environments.
- Simplifies pattern management with non-disruptive activation and automatic pattern updates in newer versions.
Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns finds Azure services on your cloud environment. Discovering some of these resources may require updating to the latest version of the Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns application from the ServiceNow Store.
Pattern-based discovery and mapping requirements
- Verify the Microsoft Azure discovery prerequisites
- For more information, see the prerequisites section in Microsoft Azure Cloud components discovery using patterns.
- Enable the relevant pattern
- The pattern for this service is disabled by default. Starting with Visibility Content version 6.28.0, activating or deactivating a pattern won't be considered a customization, and it will continue to receive updates. Patterns that were previously activated or deactivated will reset to the latest predefined version after upgrading while retaining the last active field value. For more information on enabling patterns, see Activate a disabled pattern.
- Configure the Discovery schedule to support GovCloud
- Discovering Azure GovCloud (US) accounts requires using a datacenter URL when setting up an Azure service account. For more information, see Set up Azure service accounts.
Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns application populates data in both CMDB and non-CMDB tables.
Data stored in non-CMDB tables
Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns application populates data in the non-CMDB table when running the Azure - Recovery Services Vault - Extended Inventory(LP) pattern.
You can review the non-CMDB Azure tables by navigating to . You can also search the navigation filter for the specific pattern name.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Object Id [object_id] | The unique resource identifier for the Azure resource. |
| Kind [kind] | The resource kind, indicating its specific variant or implementation. |
| DC Location [location] | The Azure region where the resource is deployed. |
| Resource Group [resource_group] | The name of the resource group containing the resource. |
| Subscription Id [subscription_id] | The Azure subscription ID under which the resource exists. |
| Tenant Id [tenant_id] | The Azure Active Directory tenant ID associated with the resource. |
| Provisioning State [provisioning_state] | The current provisioning state of the resource. For example: Succeeded, Failed, or Updating. |
| Configuration Item [configuration_item] | References the Cloud Resource [cmdb_ci_cmp_resource] table. |
