Create and define the parent-child relationships between your software products so that your child products can inherit life-cycle dates from their parent products.

## Before you begin

Role required: sam_admin

3. From the navigation menu of the License operations view, navigate to ContentParent-Child Relationship.

5. On the form, fill in the fields.
   {#create-parent-child-relationships-between-software-products__table_g2c_t1w_2dc__entry__2}

   | Field | Description |
   |-|-|
   | Parent product | Parent product that the specified child product inherits life-cycle dates from. |
   | Child product | Child product that inherits life-cycle dates from the specified parent product. If you leave this field empty, a blanket parent-child relationship is created, in which all products under the same publisher as the specified parent product are considered its children and inherit its life-cycle dates. |
   | Active | Option that indicates if the parent-child relationship is active. |
   | Exclusion | Option to exclude the specified child product from any existing blanket parent-child relationships that are defined using the specified parent product. |
   [Table 1. Create New Software Product Parent-Child Relationship form]

   {#create-parent-child-relationships-between-software-products__table_g2c_t1w_2dc}
6. Select Save.

## Result

The Software Asset Management application automatically updates the life-cycle dates of the specified child product with the life-cycle dates of the specified parent product, given that the child product does not already have its own specific life-cycle dates.
Note:
These life-cycle dates are automatically populated only in the Software Lifecycle Report \[sam_sw_product_lifecycle_report\] table. If you want to populate them in the Software Product Lifecycles \[sam_sw_product_lifecycle\] table, you must create custom life cycles. For more information on these tables and on custom life cycles, see [Product life cycles](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/F3kQ4N9Y0yHp~wo0WA8EBA "In the absence of vendor-provided life cycles, there are various capabilities that the Software Asset Management application provides to improve life cycle coverage.").

## What to do next

View life-cycle dates and other life-cycle information for both your parent and child software products in the Lifecycle management dashboard. You can access this dashboard by navigating to WorkspacesSoftware Asset WorkspaceSoftware asset analyticsLifecycle management. See [Lifecycle management dashboard](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/vH3DPovFdEe_1osM8f7LTA "Review and track the end of life (EOL) software products in your asset estate to reduce risks associated with software products that are reaching or have reached EOL.") for more information on this dashboard.
