AWS DataSync Task pattern-based discovery
Summarize
Summary of AWS DataSync Task pattern-based discovery
The AWS DataSync Task pattern-based discovery in ServiceNow enables automated detection and mapping of AWS DataSync Tasks within your cloud environment. This capability helps populate both Configuration Management Database (CMDB) and non-CMDB tables with detailed information about these tasks, supporting improved asset visibility and management.

Key Features
- Pattern Activation: The AWS DataSync Task discovery pattern is disabled by default and must be enabled. Activating or deactivating patterns does not count as customization and patterns reset to the latest version after upgrades while retaining the last active status.
- Discovery Prerequisites: Verify AWS discovery prerequisites and ensure that resources are not duplicated by checking and removing entries from the Resource Inclusion List [sacloudinventoryresourcewhitelist] table.
- GovCloud Support: Discovery supports AWS GovCloud (US) accounts by requiring the use of datacenter URLs during AWS service account setup.
- Data Storage: The discovery populates data in both CMDB and non-CMDB tables. Non-CMDB data is accessible under AWS tables in the configuration section, while CMDB data is stored primarily in the Cloud App Server [cmdbcicloudappserver] table.
- CI Relationships: The pattern establishes relationships between discovered AWS DataSync Tasks, Cloud App Servers, and AWS Datacenters to reflect hosting and referencing structures.
- AWS Tag Collection: Tags associated with AWS DataSync Tasks are collected and stored in the Key Value [cmdbkeyvalue] table for enhanced metadata management.
Key Outcomes
- Comprehensive Discovery: Automated identification of AWS DataSync Tasks with detailed attributes such as ARN, name, status, task mode, and associated configuration items.
- Accurate CMDB Population: Ensures AWS DataSync Tasks are represented in the CMDB with proper operational and install statuses, enabling effective asset tracking.
- Enhanced Visibility and Relationships: Clear mapping of task hosting relationships and tagging information supports better cloud resource management and governance.
- Upgrade Resilience: Pattern activation status persists through upgrades, ensuring continuous discovery without manual reconfiguration.
Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns finds AWS services on your cloud environment. Discovering some of these resources may require updating to the latest version of the Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns application from the ServiceNow Store.
Pattern-based discovery and mapping requirements
- Verify the AWS discovery prerequisites
- For more information, see the prerequisites section in AWS discovery using patterns.
- Remove resources from the Resource Inclusion List table
- Verify that the relevant resource isn't listed in the Resource Inclusion List [sa_cloud_inventory_resource_whitelist] table to avoid duplicate discovery. For more information on removing resources from the Resource Inclusion List, see AWS Resource Inventory discovery with Patterns.
- Enable the relevant pattern
- The pattern for this service is disabled by default. Starting with Visibility Content version 6.28.0, activating or deactivating a pattern won't be considered a customization, and it will continue to receive updates. Patterns that were previously activated or deactivated will reset to the latest predefined version after upgrading while retaining the last active field value. For more information on enabling patterns, see Activate a disabled pattern.
- Configure the Discovery schedule to support GovCloud
- Discovering AWS GovCloud (US) accounts requires using a datacenter URL when setting up an AWS service account. For more information, see Create AWS service accounts.
Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns application populates data in both CMDB and non-CMDB tables.
Data stored in non-CMDB tables
Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns application populates data in the non-CMDB table when running the Amazon AWS - DataSync Task - Extended Inventory (LP) pattern.
You can review the non-CMDB AWS tables by navigating to . You can also search the navigation filter for the specific pattern name.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Object Id [object_id] | The Amazon Resource Name (ARN) uniquely identifying the DataSync task. |
| Name [name] | The name assigned to the AWS DataSync task. |
| Status [status] | The current operational status of the DataSync task. |
| Configuration Item [configuration_item] | References the Cloud App Server [cmdb_ci_cloud_appserver] table. |
| Task Mode [task_mode] | The execution mode of the DataSync task. For example: one-time or scheduled. |
Data stored in CMDB tables
Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns application populates data in the CMDB when running the Amazon AWS - DataSync Task - Extended Inventory (LP) pattern.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Object ID [object_id] | The ARN uniquely identifying the DataSync task. |
| Name [name] | The name assigned to the AWS DataSync task. |
| Install Status [install_status] | Install status of the resource. Default value is Installed. |
| Operational status [operational_status] | Operational status of the resource. Default value is Operational. |
| Type [type] | Type of resource. The value is set to AWS::DataSync::Task. |
CI relationships
The Amazon AWS - DataSync Task - Extended Inventory (LP) pattern creates these relationships to support AWS DataSync Task discovery.
