# Request certificates and set them to auto-renew

# Request certificates and set them to auto-renew {#ariaid-title1}

Set your certificate to auto-renew when you first request it.

## Before you begin

Complete the following tasks to configure your system to renew your certificates
automatically:

1. [Configure MID Server for automatic certificate renewal](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/1GdB1vsPqCaqgeUGxJ1Lug "Collect information about root certificates stored outside your server. Create a specialized Discovery schedule.")
2. [Add required applications and capabilities to your MID Server](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/HxfFQEphVLiRRgSVV0R4IA "Enable your MID Server to auto-renew your certificates by adding the Certificate Inventory and Management and GenerateCSR applications.")
3. [Configure automatic certificate renewal](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/Chva73tPHLWWnPkoPd28Xg "Enable the auto-renewal options in your System Properties to configure your system to renew automatically Transport Layer Security (TLS) certificates before they expire.")

Role required: pki_admin or admin

## Procedure

1. Navigate to Service CatalogCertificate ManagementAutomated FlowRequest New Certificate (Automated).
2. Select the check box Want to Generate CSR?
3. On the Request a new certificate form, fill in the fields.  
   For a description of the field values, see [Certificate request form](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/AduSd~VgTNoZ9bVc9UDg0g "The Request New Certificate (Automated) and Renew Certificate (Automated) forms enable you to submit or update a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) to be submitted to a certificate authority.").
4. Select Generate.
5. Set the Validity Period for Certificate (in Days) field to validity period of the certificate.
6. Set the Renew Automatically field to Yes.  
   Note:  
   By selecting Yes, a new field appears called How many days before expiry does this certificate need to be renewed?.
7. Select the number of days before the certificate you want to renew in the How many days before expiry does this certificate need to be renewed? field.
8. Select Submit.

## Result

Your new certificate is issued with instructions to renew automatically before it expires.
