Companies worry about a skills gap as jobs are remade for the digital age

By Ben Worthen and Kathleen Phelps

Technology has reshaped most workplaces in recent years. A recent Brookings Institute study of 545 occupations found that 95% now require more digital skills than they did in 2002. While the extent of the change varies by profession, the average job requires 57% more digital skills, and 23% of jobs require a high degree of digital skills, compared with just 5% in 2002.

The upshot is a skills gap in many critical professions. Badges and reskilling programs offer a path forward. But executives are still worried.
