Why women leave tech

Fewer women are taking tech jobs and even fewer are staying

By Kathleen Phelps

Fewer women are taking tech jobs and even fewer are staying. It’s no secret the tech industry deals with a shortage of women, especially as conversations spread around corporate diversity, misconduct and fair pay.

As it turns out, research shows boys and girls actually start out pretty evenly represented in high school STEM classes. But the proportion of women begins dropping somewhere at the college level, and workplace satisfaction dips for women that do enter computing and tech fields.

Women surveyed report facing many institutional barriers, depending on the field. In science, women said not having sponsors stood in their way. Whereas in engineering, many women felt a lack of role models prevent them from advancing.

Kathleen Phelps is Bay Area designer with a rich background in technology and publishing.
