How to Level Up
By doing various activities on the Community you ascend the rank ladder. For our new members browse the site and learn all its offerings to level up. As your journey progresses past the Expert Level only actions that show your technical expertise will be counted toward reaching the next levels.

At each level there are prefixes that further indicate the members achievements. This is done by using data storage prefixes. Something we think you all can identify with and needs no explanation for context 😊

Not all activities are created equal. We are keenly aware some take extensive time and knowledge. Activities are weighted based on value they bring to the Community and knowledge learned by the member.
Activities and weight from highest to lowest
Thanks @Dan Bruhn this clarifies a lot about the designations and ranks.
Thanks Dan, this clears up a lot of confusion.
:{)
This does clear up some of the confusion that happened when the new community launched. The only thing I would say is missing though is knowing where you stand in terms of being able to move up to the next level.
Also in your post you mention only certain activities will count once you get past expert level. Can you elaborate on that? I think everyone would want what they do on the community to count.
The system today does not have a leaderboard or way to show how far you are from achieving the next level. Ideally, we would have an automated leaderboard that would show levels along with number of members who achieved it and their names/profiles. It is something we are looking to develop. For the short term, I've included a column in my article that shows the number of members who have achieved expert level and higher to date.
Once you reach Expert level and higher the following activities do not factor in to a member leveling up:
"Contributions, Message Views, Comments, Logins"
The intent here is that as you level up higher into the ranks it demonstrates technical knowledge and can't be achieved by simply doing activities that don't showcase this.

Hi Dan
Thanks for article. Though bit confused with awarded points? what it signifies and how relevant it's?
@Dan Bruhn thank you for the detailed explanation!
Hi @Dan Bruhn,
is that column with number of members per level kept updated somewhere?
cheers /Tommy
Huge respect to all you Patrons and Sages out there, but I think 'Mega Guru' is the coolest sounding level name, followed by 'Mega Expert'. 😆 😆
Super helpful, thanks!
Hi, @Dan Bruhn, thanks a lot, this ranking feature is super cool for a newbie like me to get going.
Nice to see an article about this. And I do like that you've added multiple levels of ranking.
My question is why my other account that I have as a consultant, and only have to interact with Support, suddenly became Tera Expert without ever writing or interacting with any post in the community. Is that the idea?
| Patron Sage Guru Expert Contributor Explorer |
To me - if I'm an Expert, at least I should have been contributing to the community with some posts that should be marked as helpful or a way to solve issues. But without doing so, how can I be an expert in the community?
Sure, ranking doesn't reflect once "real" knowledge, but at least that's the intention of the ranking, right?
Kind regards
/Giga Guru (and Tera Expert)
Now I understand the rankings haha.
Thank you @Dan Bruhn 😅
I've made 25 posts providing advice on different things, and still every one of my posts goes for manual approval. Is this normal in Community? Is there a level where my posts don't go for manual approval every time?
Thanks Dan and every1 for your contributions
Good to know how this works, thanks for the information.
good info. thank so much!
Does this look correct? I was already in expert level then I 'ranked up' to explorer? 😅
Same here, ranked 'up' from Kilo Guru (level 13) to Tera Expert (level 12).
Good Afternoon,
I am still not understanding the 'level up' from Level 14 to Level 12. Aren't the Levels sequential, meaning that I should go from 11, 12, 13, 14, etc.?
c
How about the blue star icon next to the name? What is that?
Someone have but someone don't 😅
Thank you Dan Bruhn, well explained about ranking structure. 👌
Helpful 🙂
Hi @Dan Bruhn,
I received a notification saying that I have leveled up to Tera Guru, yet on my profile and when posting, I see Expert. Is this a bug or a "feature"? 🙂
Thanks,
Lori
What level do you need to be at to be able to post Articles?
Before it was allowed to everyone, now it's like this:
While all community members can ask questions and post comments, only certain users can create an article. Those users are MVPs, Rising Stars, Thought Leaders, and Employees. If you would like to write blogs and/or articles as a Thought Leader, please email us at community@servicenow.com.
I am a bit surprised to be honest,,,,
Thank you @Dan Bruhn, for the clear explanation😊.
Thank you @Dan Bruhn for the clarification.
Thanks, makes senses!
Thanks!
Thanks @Dan Bruhn! Is this still the current ranking system?
Hi @cmceuen - Yes, this is still the current system. Although the numbers of users who have attained each level has changed.

Thank you for the guidance.
Hey can anyone explain how these levels are determined? and how can we see what level we are on?
