“Proof of Skill” Portfolio Project

Hello everyone!

I'm new to ServiceNow, I just got my CSA. Lesson learned BTW, take the exam on-site at USF. Even with the TSA level security checks, signing my name 6 times because it didn't match my ID, Webassessor was so much worse.

I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good first project to build in the PDI to help build my credibility with hiring managers. I'm in Tampa and interested in getting to know the community here as well.

Thanks!

Congratulations on completing your CSA. The best “first PDI build” is one that mirrors real ITSM work, is small enough to finish, and still shows breadth across the platform.

That makes sense. I took what you said and fed into ChatGPT, this what came back. Would you change anything?

🧩 Project Theme: “IT Support Request Portal”

(One small but complete mini-ITSM app)

1. Custom Scoped App + Catalog Item

Goal: Show data modeling, forms, and portal integration

  • Create a scoped app (e.g., “Device Support Manager”)

  • Build one catalog item like “Request a Laptop”

  • Add a record producer that creates a custom table record (u_support_request)

  • Include custom fields: Device Type, Justification, Manager Approval, Priority
Demonstrates: App creation, table design, catalog, record producer, forms, and portals

2. Workflow / Flow Designer Automation

Goal: Show real process automation & approvals

  • Use Flow Designer to:

    • Trigger on u_support_request submission

    • Route to manager for approval

    • After approval → create a linked Incident or Change

    • Send a confirmation email notification
Demonstrates: Flow Designer logic, approvals, notifications, data cross-linking

3. Reporting + SLA

Goal: Show analytics and performance monitoring

  • Add an SLA to track “Approval within 24 hours”

  • Create a dashboard with:

    • Average fulfillment time

    • Requests pending approval

    • Requests by category
Demonstrates: SLA definitions, reporting, and performance analytics

🌐 Optional Nice-to-Haves (for a polished finish)

  • Add a UI Policy to hide/show fields based on “Device Type”

  • Include ACLs to restrict who can view or approve

  • Customize the portal widget branding (logo, title, description)

  • Create a ServiceNow Update Set to export/share your project

🎯 Why This Works

  • Mirrors real ITSM patterns (catalog → approval → task → SLA → report)

  • Small enough for one-person build

  • Lets you talk about almost every CSA domain:
Tables, Forms, Catalog, Flow, Notifications, SLAs, Reports, and ACLs.

Hi Adrelles,

Congrats on the CSA! And welcome to the community.

I live in Tampa also. I've been working in ServiceNow for about 10 years. I do contract work and would like to connect with people who are starting out.

I feel you have two main paths:

1 - Get hired by a company that uses ServiceNow internally. This can be challenging if you don't have any experience or if you don't have connections.

2 - Work through a recruiting company to get contract work. This can be a way to get the experience needed to land a better job later.

Let me know if this helps and if you'd be interest in chatting more. My Linked in is in my profile, feel free to connect.
