What does the Original Start and End dates refer to?  Where is the 'baseline start and end dates' reside?  Why not in the planning view?

Where is the 'baseline start and end dates' reside? Why not in the planning view?

Baselines can be viewed in the Planning Console, accessed via the ellipses (upper right), and displayed in grey on the Gantt.

You can also display the Baseline start date, Baseline End date and Baseline variance by using the show or hide columns in Gantt icon (upper left).

Details for the dates can be found in the Baselines related list of the Project.

What does the Original Start and End dates refer to? Think of Original Start and Original End Date working with Actual dates.

As you see in Task One Planned Start/End and Original Start/End stay in sync while the Project Task is in Pending or Open.

Planned Start = 12/15, Planned End = 12/22; Original Start = 12/15, Original End = 12/22.

Now when someone begins working the task, and the state changes to Work in Progress, and enters an Actual Start date this is when Original and Planned dates begin to change. Below I added Actual Start of 12/10 (a few days before it was planned).

Planned Start = 12/15 (same), but see how Planned End changed to 12/17 (actual plus the duration); Original Start = 12/15, Original End = 12/15 remain unchanged.

Thank you Rae Ann!  This really helps, I have asked our Service Now Sys Admin to add the option to pick Baseline Start, End.  I have also socialized the steps you noted above to produce a proper variance.  Thank you again!

Rae Ann,

I have another question that has been driving me crazy.  Why does a user have to change the actual start?  Why doesn't the system know when that is based on when the 'task' in question is set to 'open' or work in progress?
