Hello. How are you guys doing? It is really great to finally get involved with the community here!
I am looking for some career advice from anyone who has successfully navigated the path from the functional side to the technical architecture side of the platform.
For the last five years, I’ve worked as an ITSM Analyst. While my day-to-day job isn’t exclusively ServiceNow development, I am the dedicated power user for my team. I manage client applications, and I’m always the one looking to optimize our workflows because I see so much potential that other teams overlook.
Because my system admin privileges are limited at work, I’ve been heavily utilizing my PDI to get hands-on technical experience. I currently have my CSA, and I am actively studying for both my CAD and CIS-DF certifications. I’ve also been documenting my PDI builds and posting tutorial videos and updates on LinkedIn to build up my portfolio.
My long-term goal is to become a Technical Architect. I love the execution phase of building, but I ultimately want to be the person designing the overarching data models, collaborating with DBAs and Ops teams, and bridging the gap between business stakeholders and the technical development team.
My questions for the community:
Is stepping into a junior/core ServiceNow Developer role the absolute best way to start working toward an Architect position?
Coming from an ITSM Analyst background with PDI experience, what specific roles or titles should I target next to get those necessary implementation hours?
What advice do you have for making that jump into a technical role when you don't have full system admin privileges on your current resume?
Thanks so much for any advice or guidance. Looking forward to being more active here!
