Note that discovering some UCS resources requires updating to the latest Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns application from the ServiceNow Store. The discovery only supports B-series devices; C, S, or E series devices are not discovered by this pattern.
Prerequisites
- Create SNMP credentials: Required to enable SNMP-based discovery.
- Create applicative credentials: Needed specifically for the Cisco UCS Equipment CI type.
- Verify network connectivity: Ensure the MID Server can reach the UCS Manager over HTTPS on port 443 and access the management IP address of the UCS equipment.
- Verify UCS Manager account permissions: The account used must have at least read-only access and permission to execute XML API queries for key UCS object classes such as computeRackUnit, equipmentChassis, and computeBlade.
Discovery Mechanism
The UCS classifier uses the HorizontalDiscoveryProbe to launch the UCS - HD pattern. It utilizes specific SNMP OIDs associated with Cisco UCS equipment to identify and classify devices such as fabric interconnects and aggregation switches. These OIDs map to Cisco UCS Equipment CI types in the CMDB.
Data Collected
Discovery populates the CMDB with detailed attributes for the following CI types:
- Cisco UCS Equipment: Includes name, IP address, model, distinguished name, and UCS Manager version.
- Cisco UCS Chassis: Includes name, model number, serial number, chassis ID, operational status, and distinguished name.
- Cisco UCS Blade: Includes name, model number, serial number, CPU count, CPU core count, RAM, number of adapters, chassis and slot IDs, description, blade serial number, operational status, and distinguished name.
- Cisco UCS Rack Mount Units: Includes name, vendor, server ID, availability, UUID, rack serial, CPU and core counts, model ID, total memory, distinguished name, and state.
CI Relationships
The discovery establishes important relationships within the CMDB to reflect physical and logical containment and operational dependencies:
- Chassis contains blades
- Equipment contains rack units and chassis
- Blades run servers
What Customers Can Expect
By using the UCS-HD discovery pattern, ServiceNow customers can automate the detection and accurate CMDB population of Cisco UCS B-series hardware. This supports improved infrastructure visibility, configuration management, and operational decision-making. Customers should ensure prerequisite credentials, permissions, and network access are configured properly to enable successful discovery.
Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns application uses the to find Cisco UCS equipment, including chassis and blades. Discovering some of these resources may require updating to the latest version of the Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns application from the ServiceNow Store.
