At ServiceNow, we believe diversity and inclusion are table stakes. Belonging is the breakthrough. When employees can bring their full selves to work and know that their voices will be respected and opinions encouraged, they unlock magic.
Our fourth annual Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DIBs) Report, released today, is an authentic, honest view into our response to the extraordinary events of 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic, systemic racial injustice, civic engagement, and natural disasters were catalysts for change. We used these events to sharpen our focus and to accelerate our work toward meaningful, sustainable change.
To do that, we opened up, sometimes uncomfortably. We listened actively and discussed respectfully. The very essence of our company purpose—to make the world of work, work better for people—is about inclusion, and we made space for all voices to share the change they wanted to see.
Our 5-point plan
Through our employees’ stories, we learned how they felt and what they needed. That led us to co-create, with our employees, our five-point plan, which aims to accelerate our work and create change with an emphasis on certain actions.
We’ve dedicated a chapter in our 2021 report to each pillar of the five-point plan:
Reaching systematic pay equity in 2020
Everyone deserves to be treated fairly and respectfully. We believe there should be equity across the entire talent ecosystem—from hiring through career advancement. To achieve that, we build and scale equitable people practices that result in inclusive and fair outcomes for all employees.
This includes pay equity. Because pay equity is so dynamic at a high-growth company like ours, we manage it on an ongoing basis and do regular analyses and adjustments. We’re proud to share that this approach has led us to achieve systematic pay equity company-wide and helps ensure that we maintain that pay equity on an ongoing basis.
DIBs Community, Belonging Groups
Last year, we also founded our DIBs Community with intersectionality at the forefront. The goal of the DIBs Community is to unify our employees and drive culture, change, and action. Employees within our DIBs Community pledge to foster a larger culture of belonging, where everyone’s ideas are welcome, and all contributions are valued and respected.
Our DIBs Community is made up of Belonging Groups, which are safe spaces for the unique employee identities at ServiceNow. They focus on making an impact around a common purpose for specific communities. Current Belonging Groups include Black at Now, Interfaith at Now, Latinx at Now, People with Disabilities at Now, Pride at Now, Veterans at Now, and Women at Now.
We launch new Belonging Groups based on employee interest in service of under-represented or marginalized communities. In the first half of this year, we’ll form our eighth group for Asian, Asian-American, and Pacific Islander employees and allies.
A new perspective
Our 2021 Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging Report shows that where our focus goes, our progress goes. We go beyond the numbers and use employee stories to demonstrate how our intentions are becoming realities and how our collective leadership commitment and openness to courageous conversations are motivating our drive for progress.
What happened in 2020 will not stay in 2020. It will drive us forward every day, toward new outcomes. We have been changed—forever. This change will guide us as we create a space for belonging where all people can thrive.
