Carousel widget doesn't auto start rotating when employee center loads - how to do this?

I've changed these two variables to true:

var defaultRotationState = true; //pause auto-rotate by default
c.playCarousel = true; //paused carousel state by default

But the carousel only starts rotating on hover. I've tried multiple things, but I can't get it to start automatically. How do I get it to start rotating on page load?
