ServiceNow Employee

Employees don't need more answers. They need things to get done.

Yet most employee experiences still get in the way: siloed tools that don't talk to each other, disjointed integrations that break workflows, and portals built for browsing instead of action. Employees are left navigating menus when they should be getting outcomes.

ServiceNow EmployeeWorks — the AI front door for the enterprise — now includes Employee Slate: a next-generation, AI-powered employee experience available May 5, 2026. Designed to work the way employees already use AI in their everyday lives, you simply describe what you need and it gets done. Employee Slate is built for the enterprise: connected to your systems, governed by your policies, and personalized to every employee’s role and context.

Powered by Moveworks, Employee Slate delivers:

  • Conversation-first experience that acts across every department and business application
  • Personalized, role-based insights, data, and notifications surfaced in the moment they’re needed
  • A foundation for everyday and role-based productivity — an AI front door that works for everyone, from frontline workers to knowledge workers

This isn’t an upgrade to what came before. It’s a new foundation.

And it’s just the beginning — Employee Slate ships new capabilities every month.

Powered by Moveworks — built for every employee

Employee Slate is designed to be experienced at its fullest powered by Moveworks. This is the recommended path for all customers, and it’s where the product truly comes to life — with enterprise search across all your business systems, world knowledge, the richest conversational AI, and an experience that keeps getting smarter over time.

For customers in regulated markets where Moveworks is not yet available, Employee Slate is also available powered by Now Assist, delivering core AI capabilities while you prepare for the full Moveworks experience.

Moveworks capabilities are highlighted throughout this document. Now Assist differences are called out separately at the end.

1. Conversation-First Home Page

Most employee portals are built around navigation — find the right page, find the right form, hope you end up in the right place. Employee Slate starts with a completely different assumption: that the fastest way to get something done is to just ask.

The new home page centers around a prominent AI-powered chat bar. Employees type what they need in plain language and the experience takes it from there — answering questions, submitting requests, surfacing relevant content, all within a single conversational flow.

SmritiG81649907_0-1778006215527.png

Beyond conversation, the home page surfaces what matters without employees having to look for it:

  • To-dos — priority tasks, approvals, and requests front and center, so nothing gets missed.
  • Popular Content — the most-viewed knowledge articles and topics, so employees can self-serve on common issues faster.
  • Quick Links — configurable shortcuts to the catalog items and external tools employees use most.
  • Holiday Calendar — upcoming company holidays relevant to each employee’s location.
  • Employee Communications — audience-targeted announcements, curated for relevance (Employee Slate Advanced)

Suggested prompts powered by Moveworks can be configured to reflect your organization’s most common actions and workflows, guiding employees toward high-value interactions from the moment they arrive. The home page follows an opinionated design approach: admins configure content, not layouts — keeping the experience consistent and low-maintenance, while still supporting branding like logo, theme colors, and light or dark mode.

Note: In the May 2026 release, the home page layout is fixed. Organizations cannot add additional widgets or change the layout. Widget personalization is available through My Canvas.

Persistent Navigation

Employee Slate includes a pre-defined side navigation giving employees consistent access to key destinations across the entire experience. Organizations can disable certain destinations if needed but cannot modify the navigation structure itself — keeping the experience consistent and predictable for every employee.

Persistent Omni-bar

The AI assistant Omni-bar is present on every page within Employee Slate — not just the home page. Employees can invoke the assistant from anywhere without returning to home. When prompted from the home page it opens into a full-page conversation view; when prompted from a content page or canvas it opens in split view, keeping context and conversation side by side.

Refer to Employee Slate home product documentation for additional details.

2. Interactive Split View

Context switching is one of the biggest hidden costs in the employee experience. Employees open a ticket, switch to ask a question, lose their place, start over. Employee Slate eliminates this with an interactive split view that keeps the AI assistant and content panel open side by side at all times.

SmritiG81649907_1-1778006215549.png

Whatever an employee is looking at — a knowledge article, a catalog form, a task, an approval, an org chart card — the Moveworks assistant has full context of it. Employees can read, ask follow-up questions, and take action without ever losing their place.

When deeper focus is needed, employees can minimize the conversational panel to expand the content to a full-page view — improving readability without losing the context of their conversation. The assistant is always one click away when they’re ready to continue.

Supported content types include knowledge articles, catalog forms, tasks and requests, pages, and org chart cards — all opening natively in split view.

3. Personalized My Canvas

The home page is curated by admins for the whole organization. My Canvas belongs to each individual employee — a personalized workspace that gives every employee a real-time view of their day at a glance.

My Canvas is where employees start their day: upcoming calendar events, outstanding approvals, team announcements, quick access to their most-used apps, and more — all arranged exactly the way they want it. Employees can drag, drop, resize, and rearrange widgets, remove what isn’t relevant, and add from an admin-defined library to build a workspace that fits how they actually work.

SmritiG81649907_2-1778006215564.png

  • Employee personalization — add and manage widgets from the library, drag-and-drop to rearrange, and resize to fit individual preferences.
  • Admin control — admins configure and manage the canvas experience org-wide, controlling default layouts and widget visibility to ensure a strong starting point for every employee.
  • Out-of-the-box widget library — My Requests, My Calendar, and Activity Hub available at launch. App Launcher requires Employee Slate Advanced.

Building custom widgets with AI

Employee Slate introduces a brand new widget building experience, built as part of the AIUX Framework (ServiceNow’s new AI-native tech stack). Admins have access to a modern Widget Builder UI to manually code widgets, and for those licensed with Now Assist for Creator, the AIUX Widget Creation and AIUX Widget Updation skills bring AI-powered natural language authoring on top of that foundation. Custom widgets can also be built to support custom AI Agents, for example an analytics agent that returns a chart visualization directly as a canvas widget.

SmritiG81649907_3-1778006215579.png

  • Conversational widget creation — describe what you need, iterate with prompts, publish when ready.
  • Iterate and improve — use AIUX Widget Updation to refine and update existing widgets as needs evolve.
  • Live preview — see the widget render in real time before it goes live, with the option to inspect and fine-tune the underlying code.
  • Accessibility built in — all AI-generated widgets automatically comply with WCAG 2.2 AA standards

Note: AIUX Widget Creation and AIUX Widget Updation require the Now Assist for Creator app to be licensed. Without this license, admins can use the Widget Builder UI to manually code widgets.

Refer to Personalized Canvas product documentation for additional details.

4. Unified Inbox for Tasks and Requests

Employees no longer need to check multiple portals or application tabs to stay on top of what’s outstanding. The Unified Inbox consolidates every task, approval, and request into a single, AI-prioritized view — with intelligence that surfaces what needs attention first.

SmritiG81649907_4-1778006215593.png

  • All tasks and requests in one place — across systems, including tasks, requests, approvals, and to-dos.
  • Two-tab view — ‘To-Dos’ for items requiring immediate action, ‘Everything Else’ for passive tracking.
  • AI-prioritized sorting — automatically surfaces the most urgent and important items first.
  • Seamless migration — inherits existing Employee Center task and request configurations with no additional setup.
  • Three experience paths — admins can configure how individual task types open: natively in Inbox, rendered from Employee Center, or linked out.

Approval tasks surface an AI Insights panel that shows which criteria are met, unmet, or missing — helping approvers make faster and more confident decisions.

Note: AI Insights on Approvals requires Now Assist for Platform to be configured.

Refer to Unified Inbox product documentation for additional details.

5. Org Chart and Employee Profile

Finding the right person, understanding a team structure, or getting someone’s contact details shouldn’t require a separate tool. Employee Slate brings people discovery directly into the experience.

SmritiG81649907_5-1778006215601.png

  • Org Chart — browse reporting structures and team hierarchies with rich context cards showing title, department, email, and location
  • Built-in people search — find employees quickly without leaving the org chart.
  • Employee Profile — surfaces title, department, manager, contact info, location, and preferred pronouns. Employees can update permitted fields with existing role-based permissions preserved

With Moveworks, employees can search for people conversationally and receive interactive profile cards directly in chat. Clicking any card opens the full org chart alongside the conversation in split view — so employees stay in flow while exploring team structures and people data.

Refer to Employee Profile and Org Chart product documentation for additional details.

6. Employee Communications: Announcements

Note: Requires Employee Slate Advanced.

Employee Slate brings communications authoring directly into the experience — no separate tool required. Content Managers and Admins can create and publish targeted announcements without leaving the Slate interface.

SmritiG81649907_6-1778006215616.png

  • Home Page Announcement Widget — gives organizations an easy way to highlight key policies, requests, and important updates directly on the home page. Content is visually rich and audience-intelligent — appearing based on article and catalog user criteria or targeted audiences, so every employee sees only what’s relevant to them.
  • Employee Comms Content Library — a visually rich, card-based content library that is a significant step up from the list-based experience in Employee Center. Content Managers and Admins access it directly within the Slate via a Communications link in their profile menu — no separate tool, no context switching. Browse, filter, sort, and manage announcements in a single view, and kick off creation of new content directly from the library.
  • Integrated authoring editor — a live editor with real-time preview that makes announcement creation straightforward. Link to related content — a knowledge article, catalog form, or external site. Audience targeting is simplified, deriving directly from existing KB and Catalog user criteria. Set an image focal point to ensure the best parts of your image are always visible, and configure content priority and scheduling window before publishing.

Refer to Employee Communications product documentation for additional details.

7. Enterprise Search with Moveworks

Enterprise Search delivers AI-powered, context-aware search across your entire business ecosystem — not just ServiceNow. Employees find accurate, trustworthy answers without switching between tools, powered by the Moveworks Reasoning Engine that understands employee intent and the full context of your organization’s unique content and terminology.

Every search result includes an AI summary for quick skimmability, with inline citations so employees can trust the answer and trace it to the source. From any result, employees can jump directly into the Moveworks assistant to ask follow-up questions or explore further — making search the starting line, not the finish line.

SmritiG81649907_7-1778006215632.png

  • 100+ built-in content integrations — spanning SharePoint, OneDrive, Google Drive, Slack, Outlook, and more, with native support for both indexed and live API search.
  • Granular filters — fine-tune searches by source, date, and content type for precise results.
  • Multilingual search — employees can find content across multiple languages, making it ideal for global organizations.
  • Granular permissions — employees only see information they are authorized to access, with permission controls respected across every connected system.
  • Robust analytics — track adoption, surface gaps, and drive continuous improvement.

Refer to Enterprise search with Moveworks product documentation for additional details.

8. World Knowledge with Moveworks

World Knowledge is a secure, governed AI assistant for reasoning, creativity, and general knowledge — think of it as a specialized assistant, similar to how you might use Gemini or ChatGPT, but built inside the guardrails of your organization.

SmritiG81649907_8-1778006215653.png

Employees access it as a dedicated app directly within the Employee Slate navigation, with its own persistent conversation history. They can ask questions, research topics, draft and refine content, and get guidance on complex tasks — all without leaving the Slate and without the risk of information leaving your governed environment.

Powered by Moveworks foundation models with web search lookup, example prompts employees use today include:

  • “Rewrite this embargoed press release based on the latest feedback.”
  • “Show me how to grant read-only access to an internal S3 bucket.”
  • “Summarize the latest info on Microsoft 365 vulnerability issues.”

9. Notifications

Employees receive Moveworks-native notifications directly within a dedicated notifications panel in the Employee Slate navigation — no inbox switching, no separate app. Notifications are intelligent and actionable: employees can engage with them by asking follow-up questions conversationally or taking immediate action, such as approving a request, right from the panel.

SmritiG81649907_9-1778006215675.png

Notifications are configured on the Moveworks instance, giving organizations flexibility to surface alerts from ServiceNow or any third-party platform.

10. Setup and Administration

Deploying a new employee experience used to mean months of configuration, custom development, and migration work. With Employee Slate, that changes dramatically.

For organizations migrating from Employee Center, Employee Slate is designed to inherit what you’ve already built. The Unified Inbox, Employee Profile, and Org Chart all carry over existing configurations automatically — no rebuilding from scratch, no data migration projects, no re-training your admin team on a new toolset. Most customers can have Employee Slate up and running in a fraction of the time it took to deploy Employee Center.

Admin Console

Everything you need to configure Employee Slate lives in one place — a unified admin console accessible via the Employee Slate Product Hub in Impact Admin. Set your visual identity (logo, colors, light or dark mode), configure your conversational assistant, connect search and data sources, and define your default canvas layout — all with a live dynamic preview so you see exactly what employees will experience before anything goes live. No code. No tickets to engineering. No waiting.

SmritiG81649907_12-1778007146470.png

User Experience Analytics

The moment Employee Slate goes live, you’re already measuring it. UXA integration is automatic — every session, page visit, and widget render is captured with no additional setup. The overview dashboard separates real adoption from one-time traffic, so you always have a clear picture of how employees are actually engaging with the experience.

Built on a new technology foundation

Legacy employee portals weren’t just hard to use — they were hard to build on. Fragmented UI stacks built on different tools and technologies meant slow delivery cycles, AI bolted on as an afterthought, and performance ceilings that blocked adoption.

Employee Slate is built from the ground up on the AIUX Framework — a modern, AI-native tech stack designed to change all of that:

  • AI-ready from day one — built on Lit.js and Daisy UI, an open, modern stack designed for AI orchestration with server-side rendering and elastic, modular services that scale independently.
  • Faster delivery — running off-instance on Kubernetes managed by ServiceNow, Employee Slate upgrades automatically. No more waiting on 6-month platform release cycles.
  • Less dependency on platform — admins and developers can achieve more within ServiceNow standards and governance, with accelerated productivity through code agents and a reusable design system.
  • Enterprise-grade performance — server-side rendering and elastic scale mean performance is no longer an adoption blocker.

The result: your team focuses on the employee experience. ServiceNow handles everything underneath it — automatically, continuously, and at enterprise scale.

Accessibility and Localization

Employee Slate launches fully WCAG 2.2 AA compliant, with no additional accessibility configuration required. It is localized into six languages at launch: French, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish, Japanese, and Italian. Any new widget built using the AIUX Widget Creation skill is also WCAG 2.2 AA compliant by default.

Employee Slate powered by Now Assist

For customers in regulated markets where Moveworks is not yet available, Employee Slate powered by Now Assist delivers the core experience — conversation-first design, personalized canvas, unified inbox, org chart, and employee profiles — with the following differences.

Note

Now Assist is a stepping stone, not a destination. As Moveworks availability expands, Now Assist customers will have a clear path to the full Employee Slate experience.

What’s different with Now Assist

  • Suggested Prompts — prompt recommendations surfaced on the home page based on Promoted Assets from Now Assist. Admins configure these by promoting agents in Assistant Designer, guiding employees toward the most relevant actions from the moment they arrive.
  • Bi-directional Page-Chat Interactions — Now Assist has in-context awareness of whatever page or content is open in split view, and can take actions based on it directly from the chat panel. This enables:
    • Conversational Inbox Filtering — filter and update tasks through natural language while viewing the Inbox; AI-driven prioritization surfaces the most important items first
    • Conversational Org Chart — ask about direct reports or team members in chat; the assistant returns results and clicking a profile opens the full Org Chart in split view
  • Agentic Catalog — employees describe what they need in plain language; Now Assist identifies the right catalog item, collects inputs conversationally, and submits the request automatically
  • Agentic Responses with Widgets — Now Assist AI Agent Tools can be configured to return text, markdown, or interactive widgets. Out-of-the-box agents for tasks, requests, and people return relevant widgets for related queries. Users can interact with the widget inline, open details in split view, or pin widget responses directly to their canvas. Customers can also build widgets for custom AI Agents — for example, an analytics agent that returns a chart visualization.
  • Conversational Comms Authoring — Content Managers can kick off an announcement from any KB article or catalog item using a natural language prompt. The assistant drafts text and image, collects audience and schedule details conversationally, and opens the editor for final review before publishing.
  • Push Announcements to Chat Channels — announcements can be promoted to employees via supported chat channels such as MS Teams, extending reach beyond the Slate.
  • ServiceNow Platform Notifications — surfaced in a dedicated panel within the Slate navigation, delivering actionable updates across approvals, tasks, and requests in one centralized view. Grouping logic clusters related updates together to reduce notification fatigue, and a mark all as read bulk action lets employees quickly clear their tray and focus on what needs attention. Comes with 14 common HR, IT, and request scenarios pre-configured and ready to deploy from day one — covering everything from request approvals and incident updates to HR case activity — with no additional setup required.

Not available on Now Assist: Consumer-grade conversational experience, Enterprise Search with Moveworks, World Knowledge with Moveworks, and Moveworks-native notifications.
