I am quite new to ServiceNow environment, and something that quickly came up is the need for keyboard shortcuts.
The 5 keyboard shortcuts packed with Vancouver are definitely nice, but clearly we need more.
I heard that Washington release substantially increased this number, but being the typical programmer that I've been in the last few years, I was wondering if it was possible and recommended to be able to create custom keyboard shortcuts in ServiceNow, in a way that is compatible in most environments.

You can create your own, but do realize that 'compatible in most environments' is not an option. The shortcuts are on the instance, so you won't be able to use yours on an instance without the config.
Next to that: there are some articles about it and SNUtils has a lot of short cuts, but also the warning: if you have custom shortcuts and ServiceNow decides to create a new one, using your key combination, yours will be overwritten.

One option would be to use the browser extension SN Utils. If you aren't already using it, I would highly recommend getting it and taking advantage of all the functionality it offers. The reason I mention it is because it does have option to create your own commands and keyboard shortcuts.
