Architecture reviews often focus heavily on technical risks. Teams discuss performance, integrations, security vulnerabilities, scalability concerns, and upgrade impacts. While these are important considerations, some of the most significant risks within ServiceNow programmes are architectural rather than technical.
Technical risks usually have clear mitigation strategies. Performance can be tested. Security controls can be validated. Integrations can be monitored.
Architectural risks are often more subtle.
Examples include unclear ownership models, fragmented governance structures, duplicated capabilities, excessive customisation, or operating models that cannot scale with platform growth. These issues may not create immediate delivery problems, but they can significantly affect long-term platform sustainability.
A solution may successfully pass every technical review and still introduce architectural risks that only become visible years later. Multiple teams might implement similar capabilities independently. Data ownership may remain unresolved. A platform capability may be created without a clear support model.
These decisions rarely generate immediate incidents, making them easy to overlook.
As architects, we must evaluate both short-term technical outcomes and long-term platform implications. A technically successful implementation is not necessarily an architecturally successful one.
The best architecture reviews go beyond technology. They examine ownership, governance, scalability, supportability, and organisational alignment.
Technical risks can often be resolved through engineering. Architectural risks frequently require organisational change.
Understanding the difference is critical for building ServiceNow platforms that remain sustainable as adoption continues to grow.
