How can I configure approvals for my change requests in Service Now? The video below shows you how. In Madrid, approvals for change requests are no longer configured in the approval activities in workflows. Instead, a new workflow activity type is called – Change Approval Policy – that references policies/rules that you create. When do change requests for mail server need to be approved, and by whom? What about emergency change requests? These policies are designed to make it easier to configure when and by whom change requests need to be approved.

Hi Jason,
Your video is really a great help.
But I have one question, what if I have to exclude one approval record from the assignment group, how do I do it.
For example, I am part of the assignment group for which change goes to approval in assess stage, but I am the one who raised the change or I am the one the change is assigned to, in both the cases I should not get approval record, Please help on understanding on how do I handle this scenario.
Thanks!!

The video helped and I can see how in some cases these policies might make things easier. However, I am curious also how we can do approval coordinator activities now with these approval policies. Any ideas?
Thanks!

How can I utilize Change Approval Policies to iterate over all impacted services and ask for the approval from the Service Owners?
I understand I can do it for the main service by using an "Approval Definition" of type "Reference" and than the use dot-walking from Change > Service > Approver Group. But that would exclude the approver groups from additional services which have been related to the Change via the "Impacted Services" related list.
I think it would be good to have a script field on the approval definition where you might be able to return multiple groups as previous possibile in the Group Approval workflow activity?

I too would like to know how avoid users approving their won requests, and secondly, what happens to manually added approvers and how the 'on hold' functionality would work. Thanks you.

Hi Jason,
In the approval definition, you have the all response choice, which requires all approve, is there a way to make it accept either approve or No longer Required? say, 5 approval requests generated, 2 marked as no longer required by change manger or admin, 3 approved, then the decision would be approve. Currently in this situation, the change request is still waiting for approval. I believe it might be helpful to include No longer required and even cancelled in the consideration in the design of the approval definition.
Thanks!

Hello, not sure if this helps, but we did figure out a way for the following scenario:
Our first Approval for low risk changes, goes to the Approval Group Manager.
If the Approval Group Manager is the same as the Requested By, or the Assigned To, then the Approval should go to the Approval Groups Manager's Manager
Solution 1, was a Business Rule on the Approvals table (scripted)
Solution 2 was to create another decision in the Approval Policy, and update the Approval Action in the Change workflow.
