Add Install Status choices to Configuration Item

I am thinking of adding choices to the current list of 'install status' of configuration item. Is that a bad idea? Am i putting myself at risk?

The intent is to track the following 2 choices:
- Connected : installed CI but not yet operational (ex: racked up server, not yet configured and deployed)
- Inactive : installed CI but not operational anymore (ex: all those servers that are not uninstalled by fear that something is still running on them!)

I know best practice would be to put these in the 'operational status' field but I would much prefer not having 2 different status for each CI.

On our Install Status choices we have the following entries.

On Order
Received
In Stock
Installed
Decommissioned
Disposed
Lost or Stolen

Also we have a Operational Status of the CI with the following entries that might fit your 2nd requirement

Production
Production Standby
Development
Test
Training
None

"Decommission" is not a Status, it's an activity...an activity you perform to Retire a device or place that device back In Stock. Your Status should reflect one  or both of the latter if one is a Sub-Status of the other.
