what is SOFT & HARD allocations in PPM

Soft allocations are not committed to the project, just temporarily assigned.

Hard allocations they are committed to the project.

Hi Michael

As part of a project life cycle, how would a resource plan move from Soft to Hard allocation. I am asking from process standpoint.

My understanding is, when a DM is working on a demand and creates a Resource plan to estimate the cost for that demand, Resrc Mgr will soft allocate this (If resources aren't available at all, they'll decline it or have offline discussions to understand the need and come to a solution).

So, now the demand has been approved and project is about to start. Resources need to be allocated first for project to start. How would a PM get that done. Does PM reach out to Resrc Mgr offline and RM does hard allocation on the tool for respective Resrc Plan or there is a way in the OOB Resrc Mgt module itself that RM would know when to convert that soft allocation to hard?

ServiceNow is moving to Resource Assignments , I am not seeing this soft and hard allocations in Resource Assignments , its all defaulting to "Hard" Allocations

Do we know why ?
