You don’t need a technical background to launch a successful ServiceNow career—just clarity, structure, and intentional storytelling. In this article, you'll learn how to build a resume that reflects your potential and stands out in a crowded field. Building on insights from Part 1: Start Strong – Foundational Steps Toward a Successful ServiceNow Career, I’ll walk through the resume strategy that helped me move from RiseUp with ServiceNow graduate to full-time developer.
Tip 1: Design and Format
Keep It Simple: Use a clean, no-frills resume template. Avoid fancy designs, they take up valuable space and often break across devices or Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).
Prioritize One Page: If you’re new to tech or transitioning roles, aim for clarity over quantity. Keep your resume concise and easy to skim. Aim for one impactful page. At this stage, clarity and relevance matter more than volume.
Lead With ServiceNow Experience: Any mention of your ServiceNow-related experience should be towards the top of the resume. If you've built a project, list it before non-technical roles.
Suggested Resume Layout:
- Professional Summary
- Certifications / Education
- Technical Skills
- Professional Experience (include ServiceNow projects here)
Other Formatting Tips:
- Save your resume as a PDF (File > Export as > Export as PDF)
- Use consistent font style and size (Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman work best)
- Use a clear, professional file name like FirstName.LastNameInitial_Resume.pdf (e.g., Kalisha.M_Resume.pdf)
Tip 2: Strong Professional Summary
Your summary should:
- Start with the Job Title you’re applying for (e.g., "Actionable ServiceNow Developer" or "Detail-Oriented Admin")
- Highlight Relevant Training/Experience (e.g., "RiseUp with ServiceNow Program graduate with hands-on experience using Flow Designer")
- Mention Soft Skills (e.g., problem-solving, attention to detail)
- State Your Goal (e.g., "Eager to boost development time and solve client issues on the ServiceNow platform")
Example Summary:
Motivated ServiceNow Developer with hands-on experience customizing and configuring out-of-box platform features. Strong communicator with a passion for building streamlined, scalable solutions. Proficient in Flow Designer, Client Scripts, and custom app development. Eager to boost development time and solve client issues on the ServiceNow platform.
Additional Summary Examples:
- Detail-oriented ServiceNow Administrator with practical experience gained through the RiseUp with ServiceNow Program. Proven ability to apply platform knowledge to improve efficiency and user experience.
- Technically trained and highly adaptable, with a foundation in ServiceNow workflows, Service Portal design, and platform security. Ready to make meaningful contributions from day one.
- Certified ServiceNow Developer trained through the RiseUp with ServiceNow Program. Experienced in Service Catalog configuration, Knowledge Management, and data imports. Enthusiastic about applying platform solutions to enhance business processes and team productivity.
- Dedicated professional passionate about solving problems using technology. Skilled in scripting and UI configuration through real-world projects and training. Seeking to accelerate team velocity by delivering clean, scalable solutions in ServiceNow.
Tip 3: Translating Your Experience
Focus on Relevance: Only include previous jobs or experiences that show transferable skills or reinforce your ServiceNow capabilities. Prioritize your training, projects, and platform work. For example:
Instead of writing: “Worked on a ServiceNow project to create a knowledge base.”
Try: “Collaborated with a cross-functional team to build a scalable knowledge base aligned with user needs, enhancing self-service and reducing ticket volume.”
Use Bullet Points with Purpose:
- Keep to 3–4 concise bullets per role or project
- Use strong action verbs (e.g., Configured, Designed, Implemented)
- Focus on what you did and why, and include metrics when defining the outcome where possible
Example – Listing RiseUp with ServiceNow Experience:
RiseUp with ServiceNow Program | Extern
MM/YYYY – MM/YYYY
- Completed instructor-led training and platform work using Flow Designer, Service Portal Configuration, and scripting
- Designed and built a training management application to solve organizational data issues by customizing form behavior, database changes, and process automation for requests
- Created and managed data tables with field access controls and relationships to simulate real organizational structure and permissions
- Implemented self-service features with knowledge articles, catalog items, and dashboards to improve efficiency and user accessibility
Example – Listing Projects in the Professional Experience Section:
Request and Inventory Management Application | Project
MM/YYYY – MM/YYYY
- Developed a scoped app and service portal allowing end users to request vehicles, saving 5+ hours of wait time
- Automated manual request approvals with Flow Designer, reducing human error and speeding up the request process 25%
- Configured transform maps to ensure clean data imports with zero data loss
- Improved user experience with custom UI Actions and field-level logic
Tip 4: Make Your Resume Easy to Scan
Recruiters may only spend 6–8 seconds scanning your resume. Help them see what they need:
- Clear section headers
- Consistent font and layout
- No long blocks of text
- Keywords that match the job description
Tip 5: Align With the Company’s Culture
Before you submit your resume:
- Take a few minutes to understand what matters most to the company. Tailoring your language and focus to match their values can make your application feel more intentional, and help you stand out.
- If they emphasize innovation, highlight customizations, creative problem-solving, or original solutions you've built.
- If they prioritize collaboration, emphasize teamwork, mention how you worked with others during group builds, peer code reviews, or agile sprints.
- If they value agility, note how you quickly adapted during training or took initiative to troubleshoot and resolve issues.
- If they emphasize innovation, highlight customizations, creative problem-solving, or original solutions you've built.
Final Thoughts
A great ServiceNow resume isn’t just a list of roles or skills; it’s a story. One that says: “I understand the platform. I’ve used it to solve real problems. I’m ready to do the same for your team.”
Every bullet point should be a conversation starter. If you list it, be ready to talk about it. If you can’t explain it clearly in an interview, it doesn’t belong on your resume.
