SDLC Story State

Our organization has multiple development groups with different variations of methodology and states within the SDLC.

1. Is there a way to have a custom set of story states for each development group?

2. Are there any issues with customizing states for upgrades or patches in the future?

I have a similar doubt. I want to have different set of states based on the classification of a story. For example - for Defect, I want to have a set of specific states.

Have you did that and do you have any feedback yet?

From what i have seen so far this is not possible. It seems you get one.
