A common issue with Strategic Planning/Portfolio Planning Workspace is that the planning items users are expecting to see on the Prioritization tab and Roadmap are not showing up. Here are a few steps to take if you are experiencing this issue.

  1. Check your Portfolio Plan settings to make sure the items will pass all filters
    • Confirm you have selected the correct lens entity, such as organization or product
    • Check to make sure your items will pass the planning items filters you have created
    • Check to make sure the approved start and end dates of you items are within the date ranges of the plan
  2. Confirm your planning items were created via the internal sync by searching for them in the planning items table (sn_align_core_planning_items)
  3. Make sure your planning items have a reference to the lowest level entity of your lens. For example, if you are using the organization lens, your planning items MUST have a reference to a Department. Even if you are looking at the items at the Business Unit level, SPW will only show planning items that are associated to child departments of that business unit. Even a direct relationship between the planning item and the business unit will not allow that item to be displayed.
  4. If the item is displayed on the prioritization tab but not the roadmap, confirm it is passing the roadmap filters -- as there is a default filter that the Planning Status = Prioritized -- and confirm your planning items have an approved start date and approved end date.
  5. If the planning items that are not being displayed are Demands, confirm that they were not converted into Projects or Epics. Demands that have generated a corresponding delivery record will not be displayed in the Prioritization or Roadmap areas.

Hi Rob,

This is very helpful, thank you.

In the case where a demand was accidentally converted into a project, is it possible to successfully revert back and have the demand show in Portfolio Planning?

Thanks,

Catherine

Hello @Rob Erickson ,

When using the Teamspaces, can we in the Strategic Planning Workspace view data from both teamspaces all together in one workspace  (e.g. projects from tsp1 and projects tsp2)?

As well if there is a need to separate (not only for filtering purpose but also to restrict the visibility) the data from both teamspaces how are these visualized in the SPW?

Thank you

Thanks for this post, Rob!

We're having some issues with demands showing up in the workspace for a plan.

  • The plan uses the Portfolio -> Program -> Work items lens:

  • It's showing Demands and Projects, from a selected Program ("IT Service Delivery Platforms"), with no additional filters, and with a broad time span (2025.02.01 to 2026.06.30).
  • The Demand in question does existing in the planning table with the respective program set and approved start and end dates within the time span of the portfolio plan (2025.10.01 to 2025.11.15):ChuckNusbaum_1-1737552046821.png

For the life of me, I cannot figure out why it won't show up. 🙂 Any thoughts?

Thank you!!

Visibility issues in the prioritization view for projects and demands within the portfolio planning workspace.

Portfolio : Platform Delivery

Projects :

12 projects that are not closed

7 projects display in the prioritization view

2 projects are prioritized and display on the roadmap as expected.

Demands :

20 Demands

12 demands display in prioritization view

1 demand is prioritized and display on the roadmap as expected.

Please guide on how to resolve this visibility issues on Portfolio Planning workspace. Much appreciated!!!

Following up on this, the solution from Now Support which did fix the issue was to install the Goal Framework for SPM. Thanks!

I'm looking at a particular demand in my environment, and I can see that I fall into problem 2:

  • Confirm your planning items were created via the internal sync by searching for them in the planning items table (sn_align_core_planning_items)

It looks like based on the created by date, it should have been picked up by the sync job (aka import job). I tried rerunning the import with a narrower date range that still included that demand's created date, and it still did not generate a planning item record for it. What are some reasons why the job won't pick up a particular demand?

Thanks!
