Actual Start Date and Actual End Date fields in Strategic Planning Workspace

We are looking for some guidance to better understand the Actual Start Date and Actual End Date fields in Strategic Planning Workspace. We would like to know what exactly sets the Actual Start Date and Actual End Date fields and how these two fields affect the Planned Start/End Date and Approved Start/End Date for Planning Items (e.g., Epic and Feature).

Thank you for your response. You mention Portfolio planning items in SPW and that the Actual Start/End Dates are set by the status of the project tasks. What about Enterprise Agile Planning and its planning items for Epic, Feature, and Story? How is the Actual Start/End Dates updated for these types of planning items?

When the work item e.g. project is set to state Work in progress the actual start date is populated. Actual end is set when the record is in state Complete. They get automatically populated upon state change or populating the dates changes the project state.
