Hi @KSiegel ,
We are interpreting it in different ways, I really appreciate the community collaboration.
He mentioned 'Strategic planning management' but maybe he meant 'Strategic portfolio management (SPM)'. If that is the case, i have added the list of capabilities of SPM.
Hi @Maddie Wolf ,
To add to the explanation provided by @KSiegel , here is the list of capabilities that are part of Strategic Portfolio Management application of ServiceNow.
You can think of Strategic Planning to be provided in a restricted manner with Portfolio Planning Workspace.
So yes, Portfolio planning workspace is a capability in Strategic portfolio management application.
As you can notice it is empowered by the Now platform capabilities.
Thank You!

once you have the pro license, the PPW is integrated as part of the SPW, correct? or they are still separate things? just thinking anything we need to do if we go from standard license to pro

Hello @Tao2 ,
Thanks for checking with the community.
Your understanding is correct. On upgrading from SPM Std to SPM Pro license, you would get SPW.
"just thinking anything we need to do if we go from standard license to pro" - Upgrading from the SPM Standard to the Pro license will unlock a broader set of capabilities in SPM. This means you'll be able to leverage SPW to its full potential—enabling you to think more strategically, set clear goals, and explore execution from multiple lenses.
With the Pro license, you’ll also gain access to enhanced scoring frameworks, allowing you to evaluate and benchmark execution entities more comprehensively. In short, SPW offers significantly more advanced features compared to PPW, empowering deeper insights and more impactful planning.
The table below outlines the key differences between the two to help illustrate what changes to expect.
Feature | PPW | SPW |
Purpose | Plan and manage portfolios of work such as projects, demands and Collaborative work management (CWM) boards |
Define and align business strategy and outcomes across different work items such as projects, demands, epics, features, and Collaborative work management (CWM) boards |
Personas | Executives, Strategy Officers, Enterprise Architects etc. |
Portfolio Managers, Program Managers, BU head, PMOs, Finance etc. |
Typical Use Cases |
“What are our long-term business goals?” “Where should we invest based on our strategy?” “How do our OKRs align with investments?” |
"Which investments should be funded?" “Can we execute this portfolio within available capacity?" “Which demands give the most ROI?" |
Prioritization Basis | Typically the Strategic value alignment and goal impact |
Typically the cost, benefit, risk and resource availability |
Goals | Not applicable | Create goals for your portfolio plans, set targets for them, and evaluate the progress of the goals and targets in Dashboard, List, and Hierarchy tabs |
Scoring Capability | Not applicable | Scoring framework attributes (that generate a score), helps in prioritizing and ranking the items in your portfolio plan. |
Prioritization |
In Planning -> Prioritization, you can view the items in two different ways: List and Hierarchy so that you can view the information that is most relevant to you and your stakeholders. |
In Planning -> Prioritization, you can view the items in three different ways: List, Kanban and Hierarchy so that you can view the information that is most relevant to you and your stakeholders. |
Dashboards | Execution dashboard |
Execution dashboard Product Idea dashboard Feedback dashboard Strategic Execution dashboard |
Lenses |
Provides three lenses: Organization Project Portfolio Project Program |
Provides nine lenses: Organization Project Portfolio Project Program Goals Product Digital product Strategic investments Business capability Value stream |
Creation \ Modification of Lenses |
You cannot create a new lens however you can modify the existing lenses as per the requirement |
You can create a new lens as well as modify the existing lenses as per the requirement |
EAP | Not Applicable | Enterprise Agile Planning (EAP) helps streamline communication and collaboration between teams, and drive coordination with diverse teams. |
SUMMARY:
-
Strategic Planning is the "why and where" of investment.
-
Portfolio Planning is typically "what and how" to deliver on that strategy.
This link would provide more information on the components installed with SPW such as roles, tables, jobs, custom scripts and system properties etc.
Hope this answers the query and if it does, please mark the response as correct answer to help me and the community.
Happy Monday !
Thank You!
