Resource Management - Time Off - how do you handle this?

Just in the process of figuring out how I want our team members to request time off, get that approved according to the company policies and ideally also have that straight available in / for resource management.

I am wondering if anybody has done anything in that area. After spending a few minutes on that topic;
a) from a resource mgmt perspective the simplest would be to just create a calendar event. But that would omit the whole request / approval part.

So I am wondering about:

b) let the team member "buy" a day of via the service catalog, that would allow for easy approval workflow etc. and then put the resulting request task in resource management / time off in the calendar?

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Christian

Hi Christian Probst. It looks like you want to use SN's Resource Mgmt tool to create HR-type timecards where all time is accounted for, correct? I don't think this tool was intended to do that - I think it was intended to more be used to document how long it takes to do something & better plan in the future. Whether one can set up SN to do this however, perhaps Ryan Manning can answer that question. In SN's Knowledge14 conference, I saw one customer do some custom coding to do this, but that was in an older release of SN. What version of SN are you on?

Well, the time cards would come after to record actual time. Good Point - we are not using time cards (yet), and I agree resource management wasn't intended to cover this. However, if a resource is on vacation or sick for a longer time we (and I guess others as well) want to adjust the availability in resource management to have full visibility of this...

Christian Probst - I read that the 'My Calendar' function in Resource Management allows people to mark themselves as unavailable due to vacation and recurring events. I haven't used this functionality yet so can't speak to it, but you might want to check out that functionality. Hope this helps!

Christian - I like the approach your suggesting. You could even go further to check their availability on the requested day. For example, it could spit back a message that says they need to request to be taken off a hard allocation on the requested day before the approval request is sent. Upon approval, the event is created on the calendar. My dev team likes this as well and I think it should definitely go onto the backlog!
