Can I move an existing app available in a learning instance to a different instance?

Hello forum,
I've encountered losing my lab work with the learning instances coming up with courses and it got me thinking of moving all my hands-on to lab instances. I have been trying to move few custom apps from the learners instance to my PDI via update sets but the simple instruction I have come across is to create and have a current local update set > create app and all the changes you need > save the update set and then load into the new update set.
However, I found something along the line in google that says publishing the app first after creating a update set will get the work done but am having trouble finding options to find this custom app in the instance.
Could you someone guide me/share any relevant documentation to get this done?
I'm just stepping into ServiceNow and may have interchanged terms, but my ask is to move existing apps and its modules between instances via Update Sets.
