Meet Community MVP...

Michael Fry

Hello Michael!  So tell us a little on how you got started in your career and when was ServiceNow introduced to you?

I was working on a competitor’s product when the company I was working for was acquired by a ServiceNow partner. I took it upon myself to pursue a position with the ServiceNow team not realizing they were the Managed Services shop using domain separation. Can you imagine using domain separation in 2011? We had just upgraded to Winter 2011 release. I’ve always said domain separation is 10 times harder than single tenant. You have to pay attention to the domain you are working otherwise an override is created, and you may not want that..

What do you do now? What is your favorite part of using the ServiceNow? How did your career evolve?

I’ve spent the last 6 years in internal IT owning the ServiceNow instances, the development process, and managing the resources. Most of those years still on domain separation except the last few years when I moved to single tenant instance. About a year ago I moved to Accenture to try my hand at helping clients. It’s been exciting and challenging but I’ve learned so much in a short time.

find_real_file.pngHow did you get involved with the ServiceNow Community?

When they first announced a ‘community’ way back when, I remember them saying you earn points that you can use to shop at the store. I always wanted a coat! One day when I was looking for an answer one of my problems, I came upon a question I knew the answer too. I replied and it was marked correct and off I went.

How do you work the community into your day?

I remember when I first start and needed help to my issues, it was frustrating when you spent hours looking for answers. I’m sure others feel the same way. For that reason, it might be on in the morning or late at night, I spend it on the community.

Where do you spend your time in the community?

I start with the main page, looking at all the questions and apply filtering from there. Occasionally I will move into a specific forum to see if I can help. Sometimes I like to review answers to see if I can learn from them.

How else do you participate?

I participated this year in my first Knowledge presentation. I’m already looking forward to next year.

What would you say to encourage your peers to participate more? What advice would you give to someone who wanted a nudge to start contributing?

There are no wrong answers, just learning opportunities. Just submit your answer. You might learn something, or other’s might learn from your answer. That’s what a community is all about. Sharing, helping each other.

Do you have any stand-out / memorable experiences with ServiceNow?

Meeting Fred Luddy has to be on the top of the list. I remember his presentations at the Knowledge events. He had us drooling in our seats for new features. He inspired us to think about the future and how to change our business. As I think about today’s world, we need to constantly review current processes and possible change them as new releases come out. ServiceNow is always changing and our business should too.

Is there a specific product and/or feature that you just can't believe you ever lived without?

Not really – but lots of cool products.

Thank you, Michael!
