Meet Community MVP...
Steven Bell
Hello Steven! So tell us a little on how you got started in your career and when was ServiceNow introduced to you?
I have my degree in Computer Science and have been working as a developer since 1982. I was a trouble-shooter for my CIO at a major financial company in 2011 when my boss called me in to determine where all of his laptops were in our CMDB, and whether to keep this thing called ServiceNow. Turns out they were all there in a custom table. So I was mandated to constitute a team, and fix it! We kept ServiceNow and it led to me working on that platform for the next two years. It led to me starting a new career as a ServiceNow developer!
What do you do now? What is your favorite part of using the ServiceNow?
I am a senior ServiceNow architect for my company (Accenture). I enjoy working with our clients on their CMDB databases. Personally my favorite part of the platform is the scripting capability. It provides a tremendous amount of flexibility to the platform.
How did your career evolve?
I started out with CMDB, Discovery, and scripting, then incorporated Asset Management, ITSM and integrations. From there I have expanded into many other areas garnering expertise mostly in CMDB, HAM, ITOM and ITSM. During all this I became a certified ServiceNow trainer and slowly have worked myself into teaching more than 10 topics.
How did you get involved with the ServiceNow Community?
Originally it was one of my go to places when I was learning the platform and trying to understand how it worked.
You're very generous with your time. What inspired you to start answering in addition to asking?
Later, I wanted to give back to the community some of the lessons I had learned that had not been available to me. To give developers the “missing” documentation and help them with their understanding of the platform.
How do you work the community into your day?
I think of and develop topics for articles and Ask-the-Expert sessions. I highly recommend the community to my clients and to my classes when I am teaching. Finally the most use is getting my questions answered: Research!
Where do you spend your time in the community?
Blogs, Ask-the-Expert, and most of all: Research.
How else do you participate?
When I am at Knowledge I help out at the Community booth, and volunteer for round-tables. I also help out as needed when asked by the MVP leadership.
What would you say to encourage your peers to participate more?
Look for ways to help others. Participate in your SNUG! Blog your experiences there! Teach others what you have learned.
What advice would you give to someone who wanted a nudge to start contributing?
Write about what you know. Even if it is just a small code snippet or tip or trick! Every little bit helps.
Any other advice to share with those just starting on their journey with ServiceNow?
Don’t worry about being wrong. Keep trying, you succeed by doing!
Do you have any stand-out / memorable experiences with ServiceNow?
When I received my 2019 MVP award at Knowledge 19! That was really awesome! What an honor!
Is there a specific product and/or feature that you just can't believe you ever lived without?
List views! I keep trying to use the filter functions in non-ServiceNow products!
Do you have a favorite piece of content on the community?
Yes, my topical list of articles. I find I go to them often to remember how I did something!
What motivates you to participate? Why do you do it?
To help others understand and use the complex things in the platform.
Any other interesting tidbits, stories, hobbies you'd like to share?
I am an avid runner, and enjoy working out. I also do leatherwork. I like spending time with my wife and family. Traveling with my wife to someplace where we can go hiking together.
Thank you, Steven!

@Lisa Latour I noticed that the link you have on 'Professor' Bell's name "Steven" doesn't link to his profile, but to a different community member's profile.
I've worked with him for many years now and he's definitely been an MVP in mine and many others' ServiceNow learning path. I'd recommend people take a look at his profile and check out his articles and blog and mark them as helpful (because they are!).
Thanks for giving Steven this much deserved spotlight!
