Hi everyone!
This article originally began in another post which was from the Orlando version, but has now grown in to this comprehensive article that has been viewed over 100,000 times AND has over 200 Helpful ratings! This article contains both a "Quick" Delta Exam Guide and a "Full" Delta Exam Guide. I'll start things off with the quick version and then follow that with the full version.
"Quick" Delta Exam Guide
- Delta exams become required for most individuals at the end of every year, for mainline certifications holders who did not achieve their mainline certification on the latest ServiceNow release (i.e., Xanadu).
- The delta exam period for the Xanadu release is currently scheduled for January 15, 2025 through April 30, 2025.
- Delta exams usually consist of 20 or less questions.
- They are open book, non-proctored, timed (1-1.5 hour) "assessments" to see if you're familiar with the latest ServiceNow information related to that delta exams focus area.
- An annual ServiceNow certification maintenance fee of $200 (or $100 for certain tiered ServiceNow Partner organizations) is due during this delta exam period and applies to all mainline certification holders that have had their certification for a period of 1 year or longer. To reiterate, you will only owe this fee if you have had at least 1 mainline ServiceNow certification for 1 year or longer by the time the maintenance fee period begins.
- You are required to take specific delta exam(s) (regardless if you owe a maintenance fee or not) if you did not take your certification exam on the latest ServiceNow release (i.e., Xanadu).
- Login to Now Learning, click "My Certifications", and if one is listed as "At Risk", you must take the delta prior to the end of the delta exam period.
- You can attempt the delta exam up to 5 times.
- After April 30, 2025, if you not paid your annual maintenance fee (if applicable) AND you have not passed that specific delta exam, you will become uncertified and will need to take the original certification exam all over again.
- The content for delta exams are based on the release notes for the latest ServiceNow version.
- Here's my personal recommendation link which should be pre-filtered to the Xanadu release notes. This allows you to search the question in an effort to help you easily learn about that topic in an effort to then help you pass the delta exam 🙂
- Additionally, ServiceNow has created Delta Exam Study Guides you can reference.
"Full" Delta Exam Guide
Maintenance Fee
Beginning January 15th, there is an annual maintenance fee of $200 (or $100 for ServiceNow partner organizations) due for individuals who have been certified with at least 1 mainline certification for one full year or longer. At the end of next year (2025) we'll repeat this process and the annual maintenance fee will become due again.
ServiceNow will email individuals who are be required to pay the maintenance fee and have previously mentioned verbiage such as this paragraph in the email:
"Our records indicate that you have been in our certification program for one year or longer and will need to pay the $200* annual certification maintenance program fee that will open on January 15, 2025. By staying up to date with ServiceNow’s latest product release, you are more likely to accelerate the new Now Platform functionality to drive automation and increase your return on investment. The yearly maintenance fee:
- Ensures that you remain up to date with continued learning
- Saves you time and money; you are not required to repeat training or pass the Mainline Certification Exam again
- Opens access to the required delta exams to maintain your certification
Paying the fee in Now Learning
Now Learning accepts either credit card or learning credit payments for the CMP fee. Once payment is submitted, fees are non-refundable. Please refer to the following articles to guide you through the CMP payment process in Now Learning.
How to pay the certification maintenance fee with a credit card
How to pay the certification maintenance fee with learning credits
Steps to take your Xanadu delta exam after payment
- Log in to the Now Learning training platform
- Under the "My Certifications" tab, view the status of your certifications. You will need to pass delta exams for those certifications that say, "At Risk."
- Take each delta exam. Once you pass your exam(s), the certification status fields will change to "Current" within 24 hours.
If you have questions, please review the Certification Program Guide, or find answers in the Help Center.."
Delta Exam -- what is this?
In the Fall of 2018, Delta exams were introduced. Prior to the Fall of 2018, individuals who obtained ServiceNow certifications didn't really have to keep up with the latest release information. Most did on their own, but to ensure the quality of what a ServiceNow certification means and the respect behind it...it was decided to create a Delta (otherwise known as a "change") exam. These delta exams are lightweight, 20 question or less, non-proctored, open-book "exams" that are for mainline certifications. These delta exams are not for micro-certs. The delta exams are updated in November of every year and contain information related to the latest ServiceNow release.
ServiceNow isn't here to beat you down with yet another exam to cause you stress...it's meant to keep all of us up to date on the latest changes. That way, we're all on the same page and we've at least seen/read/heard about new or modified features in the latest release.
For Xanadu, the English and Non-English Delta Exam window will be from January 15th, 2025 to April 30th, 2025.
- How do I know if I need to take the delta exam? You are required to take the delta exam if you obtained a respective mainline certification (system administrator, application developer, implementation specialist, etc.) prior to this release. Remember, this delta exam is about the changes introduced with Xanadu. So if you took your certification exam AFTER the Xanadu certification window has opened, your recent exam already contained Xanadu related information so, you're all caught up. However, if you had your mainline certification prior to Xanadu being released OR the Xanadu examination window hadn't begun, you must take the delta exam for Xanadu. Another way to verify if you need to take the delta exam is to login to your Webassessor account: ServiceNow Webassessor and click "My certifications" at the top of the screen. Here, you'll see a list of your certifications which will have a status of either: Current, At Risk, Expired, or Never Attained. If your certification says "At Risk", then you need to take the delta exam.
- Ok, so I need to take the delta...now what? You'll need to login through your Now Learning account, which is a separate portal from this ServiceNow Community. Once logged in to your Now Learning Account, click on "My Certifications" and you'll see a list of all your certs. You'll see a status there as well saying Current, At Risk, etc. For the certifications At Risk, there'll be a link to click that will take you to the instructions page for that particular delta exam. Here's an example of the process you may go through after logging in to your Now Learning Account to verify that you need to take a delta exam, how to access that delta exam, and then enrolling and subsequently taking the exam:
- How difficult are these delta exams? Honestly...they're not meant to be extremely difficult. The goal of all this is to keep you up to date with latest information regarding recent changes and modifications. These assessments are open book, not proctored, 1 to 1.5-hour time limit, and consist of 20 or less questions. Most of the time the delta exams won't take you the full allotted time given.
Do you have any tips or advice for me?
I do! I'm so glad you asked! All you need to do is review the Xanadu Release Notes. Once you've done that, simply launch a delta exam and as an additional resource I'd recommend you have open, here's a personal link I use. You can have any resource open that you'd like while taking this exam. For the personal link I included above, it should be pre-filtered to the Xanadu release notes already. From there, if you need help during your exam, use this link and simply search for the information.
Additionally, ServiceNow has created Delta Exam Study Guides, which are new knowledge articles focused on each mainline certification that contains recommended topics and information you should be familiar with for that respective focus area. I'd highly suggest bookmarking/saving the link as it appears that these knowledge articles will be updated each delta exam cycle instead of brand new articles being created each time.
I'll also link to the ServiceNow Credentialing Program Guide . A lot of this content came from that, but also from my own personal experience and knowledge I have about these delta exams. Please refer to the attachment below if you have any other questions or want to see it officially from ServiceNow.
Can you fail? If so...what happens?
I know none of us want to fail the delta exam, but here's some information in case you do. If you fail your delta exam, you can retake the delta 4 additional times (so a total of 5 times overall). If you fail the delta exam a 5th time, you become uncertified for that specific mainline certification and you will be required to pay for and take that proctored mainline certification exam all over again. Remember, you must pass your delta exam on or before April 30th, 2025 or your certification will become expired.
Please don't be the one who waits until the last minute. A lot of people push the delta exam off until the very end (see some of the comments posted below). Get it over with as soon as you can!
Something's wrong with my Now Learning Account...HELP!
If you need assistance with your Now Learning Account (i.e., your certification isn't showing At Risk and for some reason you think it should, your Now Learning Account is reporting that your certifications are At Risk and you are unable to search Now Learning, find your respective Delta exam for your mainline(s) certification and successfully enroll to then take the exam...), please check out some of the comments below as this similar scenario may have been covered and resolved below or login to your Now Learning Account and then locate the "Help Center" menu at the top of the screen and choose "Create a Case" from the menu on the right:

Hi all,
Last reminder for this delta cycle.
The deadline to complete your delta exams is in 2 days - Wednesday, August 3rd.
You can only retake the delta exam once every 24 hours (up to 3 additional times for a total of 4 attempts). If you fail it on August 3rd, you won't have the opportunity to retake it...so don't wait until the last day!
If you don't complete your delta exam before the end of August 3rd...your certification will expire, meaning you won't be officially certified any longer.

Hi everyone!
The delta exam window for the Fall 2022 season begins!
You will have until February 17th, 2023 to complete your delta exams.
As always, don't wait until the last minute.
If you're attempting to take your delta exams right away, please know that it may take ServiceNow a small bit of time to get them all loaded into Now Learning, so some may not show up right away. As the day progresses, more will be loaded and available.
If you have any questions, concerns, issues, please leave a comment or reply here and we'll all try to help each other out!
Thanks!

Is so disappointing to try and research anything in ServiceNow, be it Docs or Community, you will not find a clear answer, nor what you need, in Community you will be told to research. I have found always better results in external sources, since they actually care to show the information.
In my 3 experiences with Deltas, I have always found myself with this problem. Some of the question are simply not at all on the notes or even the documents.

Hi @Ederson Arrieta - I'm sorry to hear that you're having a bit of a tough time with the delta exams and the release notes and feeling like there are gaps. The delta exam questions have derived from the release notes about 99% of the time. The San Diego delta for CSA was a bit rough, I will say that, but normally...it's simply the matter of reviewing the release notes prior to taking the delta for the respective area of focus for the delta exam you want to take. Then, during the delta exam, you are more than welcome to search the release notes etc. The goal is for you to research a bit more about it and actually be exposed to the content versus taking 2 seconds to press ctrl+F and find it, select the answer, and move on. External content that others create related to delta exams are usually inappropriately giving the answers...which violates ServiceNow terms and conditions.
@Jessica Kelley - you are absolutely welcome and thank you very much for taking the time to read the article and provide your feedback/support. Thanks!

@Allen Andreas at no point am I talking about being given the answers directly in order not to search or do an Ctrl + F to quickly search key words. But funny how the threat of going against the terms and conditions is always brought up, even though ServiceNow has made it their personal goal to not be used as the main resource for finding information.
If I'm asked what a role does, or which role is the one in charge of certain action, that can be research and found, we can struggle but we can be certain to find the answer, that's great.
If I'm asked a vague question, sort of a "Gotcha" question, that's not found in the release notes and can't be found using the docs either, that's what I'm complaining about. The whole community and documentation is built around this idea of not being given an answer just because "You can research more", and that research usually takes you anywhere but ServiceNow, as you can see users even sharing answers from other sources, not the docs.
What I gathered from your answer is the same attitude of gatekeeping you find in StackOverflow trying to dismiss legitimate criticism as simply "Lazy people that can't bother to research".

Hi,
@Ederson Arrieta - I've been a part of the ServiceNow Community for over 6 years at this point and in no way is the common theme on the Community forums a: "go and research it" type vibe. If anything, there's a huge push from all of us who help each other and give answers (albeit the "answer" may be a reference to another post that already has a correct answer marked, but the point still remains) to help directly (although there's a good line between flat out giving free consulting/assistance versus you learning as we discuss things). Even with my article here, the intention was to break it down and not really have you go and "research" what the delta process is...who owes the maintenance fee, etc. In any case, it's extremely unfortunate you haven't found the documentation, the release notes, or the Community to be of any real help to you.
As far as feedback for the delta exams and the content, etc. please submit a case via Now Learning as I've been told that the team who works on the delta exams are actively watching for cases to come in about that specific topic to review them. Feel free to reference my article above on how to submit a case (if you are unsure)...no need to go somewhere else and research how to do so 😀
Take care!

Hi @Allen Andreas, I got CSA certification in June 2022 (San Diego), do I still need to pay the $200 fee for the Delta(Tokyo) or do you pay only if you take a delta after one year of your CSA certification? I am a bit confused about this.
Thanks 🙂

Hi @cicgordy - you only pay the maintenance fee if you held at least one ServiceNow certification for a period of one year or longer. If you've only obtained your CSA cert and that was in June 2022, then for this current maintenance fee period, you won't owe the fee and can just take the deltas. Once you login to Now Learning, you won't see any request to pay a fee and instead just see that you need to take your deltas.
@nimerkawwa - completely agree! 😀

Dear Allen,
I have given CSA exam on 18th Sept'2022 & at that time I was working with Infosys limited. Now I have joined T-systems(November 2022). My account merge was pending for almost a month from SNOW learning team which result in expiring CMP badge. I have raised few cases with support team but I am not getting any positive response. Could you please let me know what will happen if CMP badge is not reactivated in time & cross the Tokyo Delta exam deadline of February 17, as I am seeing my CSA certificate in my webassessor account as AT_RISK.

Hi @shilpasirsat,
If you had just received your CSA certification in September 2022 AND that was your first ServiceNow certification (which I imagine it was), then you would NOT owe the maintenance fee right now as it's only due if you've had a ServiceNow certification for a period of one year or longer.
I'm not sure if you listed your dates correctly in your post as you do mention the CMP badge and usually most others wouldn't know what that is if they're new. So, in order to have had the CMP badge previously, you would have had to pay the maintenance fee last fall (2021), which covered deltas for fall 2021 and spring 2022. Then, you'd pay the fee again in fall 2022 for the delta period of fall 2022 and spring 2023.
Perhaps you can give a bit more information as your post is slightly confusing if you just received your CSA in September 2022 as you wouldn't have owe any maintenance fee right now...you'd just need to take your delta exam. Your certification will show as "AT RISK" because you haven't passed your delta exam. See if you can login to Now Learning (with the Now Learning account that has your Webassessor email associated to it that has the certification on it) and then take your delta.

Hi,
I have two questions and will be very grateful for your response 🙂
I have passed Tokyo delta exam in November '22 and from April/May '23 I'm going to become a mum. In my country this means I'm leaving for maternity leave for more than a year. Am I correct to think that during my leave I will have to pass the next deltas even though I will be off (so the closest one from March/April, then in November and again, in March)?
And one more thing. I have passed my original System Administrator exam in September 2022, so do I understand correctly that I will be obliged to pay $200 fee only in November '23, not yet in March?
Thanks in advance.

Hi @Joanna M
Congrats on becoming a mum!
For the next round of Deltas which will begin in the March/April timeframe you mentioned and for the ServiceNow Utah release, you will be required to pass those Deltas within the 90 day window or your certification(s) will become expired. This window may close somewhere within the June/July period.
You will NOT owe the maintenance fee in March/April as it's only due at the end of the year in the timeframe you mentioned (October/November) and only after you have been certified with at least 1 certification for a period of 1 year or longer (which by then, you'll be over the 1 year mark since your Sept. '22 CSA certification).
Thanks!

Joanna14,
First - congratulations on becoming a Mum.
Second - You are correct that you will need to maintain your certifications while you are out on leave including likely needing to pay the maintenance fee next fall. The fee is only assed in the fall of each year. More can be learned via the ServiceNow certification - Candidate Journey Guide here: https://www.servicenow.com/services/training-and-certification/journey/#/

Hello, Allen!
I've been having trouble starting the delta. I've read the documents related to the delta exam and I don't have to pay the fee, I got my csa cert on October 16th, 2023 and the date to be credited with this fee is October 1st, 2023. But when I try to start the delta exams it says prerequisite required (servicenow csa certification and certification maintenance fee 2022 badge) since I don't own the badge I cannot start the delta exam.
When I click the badge it shows me an undefined object page.
Is there a way to obtain this badge if I'm not supposed to pay?

Sorry you're having trouble. Did you mean October 16th 2022? If so, that would have been after Tokyo was released, which means you already took the mainline exam on that version and thus wouldn't have to take the delta exams (as they're based on Tokyo).
Also, in the fall, when the 2023 fees are due, you may not owe then either because you wouldn't have had your certification for a full year yet.
So to recap, you don't need to pay the maintenance fee right now and you shouldn't need to take the delta exam. When you login to Now Learning are you seeing a message saying your certification is At Risk? I wouldn't think you would. Additionally, you can login to Webassessor with appropriate credentials and click the "My Certifications" link at the top of the page. Does it show your certs are "Current" there or "At Risk"?
I would believe you would start taking the deltas after the next release (Utah) which comes out in March/April time frame. Only then and thereafter would you need to start taking the delta exams. That's most likely why you're seeing the errors and such you are now, because you may be searching Now Learning for the delta exams and trying to take it, but you don't need to be doing that right now.
If you still think you need to take the delta now and you're having trouble, you can submit a case via Now Learning through the "Get help" menu at the top.
Thanks!

yes, I'm sorry, it was 2022.
and I do see the message that says that my certification is at risk in web assessor and Now learning.
I don't know what to do. I sent a ticket and still get no answer. 😞

Ah, ok. Actually, checking webassessor it says the first date to complete Tokyo was in November. So, you did take it on San Diego and would need to take it on Tokyo. For some reason I thought October was Tokyo. Sorry about that.
Have you had a certification previously, but then it expired, and now you got it back again?
Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do on the forums for this as the fee isn't due unless you've had a mainline certification for a period of 1 year or longer. So something is making it seem like you owe it and perhaps you've had a certification before?

Hi all,
Just a friendly reminder that this is the last week to take your Tokyo delta exams if you haven't already.
Ensure you complete them or else your certification(s) will expire.
Thanks!

I do believe the Vancouver Delta exams might be a bit different from what we are accustomed to. Here is an example:
Delta Exam Study Guide Content
Note about the Vancouver Delta Exam
Normally, the Delta CAD exam consists of questions on topics related to the most recent family release. Considering there are minimal CAD-related updates with the Vancouver release, this Delta exam will instead focus on topics where users often have questions. This Delta exam will cover topics related to Access Controls and Data Models.
Review the information provided in the Study Guide below and then answer the Delta exam questions.

Nice callout @Sukraj Raikhraj - and interesting to see that if there are no major changes for a specific mainline focus area that there will still be a Delta exam and it will probably follow the same format as seen in the CAD Delta [for Vancouver] (where it consist of general topics that may be more difficult to understand or need additional explanation/learning).

Hi all,
For those who have taken some or all of their deltas, did you find that the study guides that ServiceNow created are helpful?
I've heard mostly positive feedback thus far! 🙂

@Allen Andreas, the study guides were helpful. I liked that the exam questions were written so they weren't a simple copy-and-paste, search-and-find the answer. Those types of exams never feel legit to me. With the SN delta I had to read the guides and documentation to understand the question topics, and then I could discern the correct answer.

For me the study guides, and the personal link search as well as a more general DOCS search were very helpful.
In the end it's what ever works for you to get the knowledge and demonstrate the understanding through answering the delta questions that matters. All of these are tools in the tool bag to get that task accomplished so so that one does not have to repeat a full course and retake of the associated exam.

Thanks @David Nottingha 🙂
@Ct111 - I certainly appreciate the frankness. I don't take offense as I don't write the release notes or control the SEO for ServiceNow, etc. haha. In past releases, the "personal link" has been the most helpful. Either way, to each their own, and yep, sometimes a good ole Google search is the way to go if you're not finding what you're looking for. The end goal hope...is that at least you're being exposed to the information and logging it away mentally. That's really what these deltas are all about. Take care!

Updated the article to specify that delta exams could be anywhere from 1 hour to 1.5 hour. Also that you seem to now get 5 attempts, instead of 4 (like previously). And removed the portion about having to wait 24 hours before attempting again. You can, as of now, reattempt a delta exam right away, if you fail.
Thanks!

This delta exam guide has been updated for the Xanadu release.
As a reminder, the Xanadu delta exam period will occur later than "normal" and will take place from:
- January 15th, 2025 to April 15th, 2025.
The maintenance fee will also be due during this time period.
Additionally, all mainline (Webassessor) exams won't be updated to Xanadu until January 15.
When delta study guides are made available for Xanadu (which I suspect won't be made available until this delta exam period begins), the link I've included in this article will take you right to them.
If you have any questions, feel free to comment!
Thanks!

Hi all,
The delta exam guide was already updated in prep for Xanadu and I've confirmed today that the link to the Delta Exam Study Guides I have listed above does remain the same. So we're all good to go!
You have until April 15th, 2025 to complete them. Don't push it off for too long!
Cheers!

Hot off the press: the delta deadline has been extended by 2 weeks. New deadline: April 30.
The extension is due to the tech issue that's made it impossible to pay the maintenance fee during the past fortnight. This issue is now resolved.

Hello Allen,
In the CSA Delta Exam Study Guide for Xanadu, (KB0012121), it states, "The content presented in this knowledge article is the exam content you will be tested on to maintain your certification." The topics are the Shared Responsibility Model and the Security Center. No other Release features are discussed in this knowledge article. Is the content of the Study Guide therefore the scope of the Delta exam? Or, is this not correctly stated? Wouldn't all release note features be part of the scope of the Delta exam? Can you confirm the scope of content for this Delta Exam?

Q: Is the content of the Study Guide the scope of the Delta exam?
A: Yes
Q: Wouldn't all release note features be part of the scope of the Delta exam?
A: You would think so, but for this iteration of this particular delta, it's not the case.

Thank you Simon for clarification on the delta exam scope being confined to the content described in the Delta Exam Study Guide knowledge article. This certainly will narrow my focus and accelerate my preparation for taking the Delta exam.
