A few weeks ago, I decided to take on a challenge that had been on my radar for a while—the ServiceNow CIS Data Foundations Certification. For anyone working in ITSM or ITOM, CMDB and CSDM aren’t just buzzwords—they’re the backbone of a well-structured IT environment.

I wanted to share my experience, not just to celebrate the achievement, but to help others who are planning to take this certification.

Why This Certification Matters

The CIS Data Foundations certification validates your ability to manage and maintain a healthy CMDB aligned with the Common Service Data Model (CSDM). It’s not just about knowing definitions—it’s about understanding how data flows, how relationships are maintained, and how governance impacts IT operations.

Exam Overview

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Format: 75 questions in 90 minutes
  • Question Types: True/False || Match the following || Multiple Choices || Single Choice
  • Key Topics: CMDB Dashboard || Health Dashboard || Principal Class || Data Refresh Rules || CI Class Manager

Important: Most questions are scenario-based, so you’ll need to think like a CMDB Admin solving real-world problems.

How I Prepared (and What I Recommend)

Here are the strategies that worked for me:

Understand CMDB & CSDM deeply Don’t just memorize definitions—know how they interact in real implementations.

Explore CMDB Health Dashboard Learn how to interpret health scores and troubleshoot data issues.

Practice with CI Class Manager Get familiar with creating and managing CI classes.

Review Data Refresh Rules Understand how and when data gets updated in CMDB.

Focus on scenarios Ask yourself: What would I do if this issue occurred in production?

 Key Takeaways

This certification taught me that data foundations aren’t just about structure—they’re about strategy. A well-maintained CMDB ensures accurate reporting, better incident resolution, and stronger governance.

If you’re planning to take this exam, focus on practical use cases and hands-on experience.

TBH @Nilesh Pol you should move this post to Training and Certifications.

Because Rising Star Corner is a private section of the Community, very few people will see it here.

This would make a great session at a Developer Meetup @Nilesh Pol - maybe see if there is a group near you here and reach out to the organizers: https://www.servicenow.com/community/developer-meetups/ct-p/developer-meetups

Thank you for sharing your experience. It is helpful to hear back for those who have already taken the exam.

I just passed recently and can emphasize the need to know:

CI Class Manager vs Technical Service Offering precedence, Static vs Dynamic rules, Indentification vs Reconciliation order and thier priorities, CMDB Workspace, Health metrics (path and triggers), as well as

CMDB and CSDM Foundations Dashboard tabs inside and out!
