New to ServiceNow: What is the best learning path to become job-ready?

My name is Oluwaseyi , and I am excited to join the community. I recently completed the "Associate AI Support Specialist" course and am eager to kickstart my journey. 

For someone looking to get hired, what core areas should I focus on practicing in my Personal Developer Instance (PDI)? Should I prioritize the Certified System Administrator (CSA) certification first, or split my time learning basic JavaScript and scripting? Any tips on how to stand out to recruitment teams would be highly appreciated!

Hi Oluwaseyi,
The CSA certification is the foundational industry standard. Most recruiters use CSA as the baseline requirement.
learn Java script fundamentals(variables, loops, arrays, condition logics, functions, try-catch blocks etc.,) parallelly outside of servicenow.
It is recommended to complete CAD on-demand course available in servicenow university which covers 'scripting fundamentals' and 'application development' fundamentals.

These courses have lab activities, you can get hands-on practice.
Core Areas to Practice in your PDI
1.Data Modeal & Security: practice creating custom tables, configuring forms/lists, and writing Access Control Rules (ACLs) to manage data security.
2.Core Automation Tools: build automated workflows using 'flow designer' learn about trigger, activities, actions, sub-flows .
3.Basic platform scripting: Implement client scripts (UI behavior) and Server scripts (such as Business Rules). Use client and server script api's.
4.ITSM process: customize and test standard Incident, Problem, Change, and Service Catalog.

As a ServiceNow trainer, I’d recommend starting with the ServiceNow ecosystem fundamentals and foundational training. Before jumping into AI or any advanced topic, it’s important to understand the platform first—what ServiceNow is, how it is built, the terminology, and the different technologies and capabilities within the ecosystem.

There are dedicated learning journeys available, and the training itself is free. I’d suggest following the foundational journey first, then moving on to CSA (Certified System Administrator). From there, you can choose a more specialised path based on your interests and career goals.

Build a strong foundation first, and then explore AI and other advanced areas with a much clearer understanding of the platform.

ServiceNow is growing rapidly in both breadth and depth. The best way to start is by earning the CSA (Certified System Administrator) certification, which builds a solid foundation in platform fundamentals, terminology, and core modules. Once you gain hands-on experience through CSA, you can decide your next learning path.

Employers value professionals with multi-module expertise, so after completing CSA, consider exploring areas like ITSM, GRC, HRSD, CSM, or SecOps to broaden your portfolio.

Currently, the training is free, which is a great opportunity — though the real challenge lies in gaining hands-on experience. To overcome this, spend at least 1–2 hours a day engaging with the ServiceNow Community — read discussions, answer questions, and share your insights to strengthen your understanding and confidence.

If your goal is to become a developer, focus on building scripting skills using resources available on developer.servicenow.com. Regular practice will enhance your technical expertise.

Start with the CSA and then choose your direction based on your interests — whether as an Admin, Developer, Business Analyst, Change Manager, or Project Manager. A strong foundation will give you the flexibility to explore any of these paths.

1. Spend at least 1–2 hours daily on the ServiceNow Community. Observe the kinds of technical questions being asked and how experienced members respond. You’ll learn a lot passively this way—and I highly encourage you to start answering questions as well. Explaining concepts to others will improve your technical thinking and deepen your understanding.
